Mobilizing the Suffering of the Body: Live-In Migrant Domestic Workers in Spain During the Covid Lockdown
Live-in care work has been historically an exploitative labour niche for migrant women in Spain. Drawing on interviews with domestic care workers in Spain during 2020, we document how the Covid crisis exacerbated existing patterns of labour extraction. The home lockdown amplified time, space and task fuzziness that characterize live-in care work. These workers' bodies buffered the negative impacts of the crisis at a cost to their own wellbeing. W…
Feeling at home: Migrant homemaking through the senses
This chapter focuses on the sensorial nature of migration and migrants' homemaking practices. It brings together contributions from Migration Studies and Sensory Studies. More specifically, this chapter builds on phenomenological contributions on the feeling of being at home in order to highlight the central role of the senses in homemaking practices in the context of migrancy. Migration, as a fully corporeal and embodied experience, brings about…
Eran del barrio y atendían a razones: La Terminología Del in/Civismo Y La Diferencia Entre Estar Y Ser Del Barrio
In 2006 came into force in Barcelona the popularly known as “Ordinance of Civism” with the explicit purpose of promoting coexistence through the regulation of behaviour in the city public spaces. This article analyses the relationship between such bylaw and the growing discomfort of certain popular groups regarding an increasing range of behaviours in the urban space. After a decade, the greatest success of this ordinance has been the inclusion i…
Anti-social behaviour in the square. Differentiation mechanisms among non-native groups in a peripheral neighbourhood of Barcelona
This paper analyses differentiation processes between non-native groups in a stigmatized peripheral neighbourhood of Barcelona. Its more established dwellers - internal migrants from the South of Spain - have set in place differentiation processes between them and the more recently arrived international migrants. To substantivize differentiation processes, in a context where race has been largely silent, they appropriate the "civic terminology" t…
Gendered (im)mobility: Rooted women and waiting Penelopes
In rural Mexico, as in many other locations worldwide, women’s mobility is depicted as less natural or more problematic than men’s. Simultaneously, women are perceived as less mobile than their male peers. Does this mean that they move less? Where are these images derived from? Using ethnographic data, this article explores the social construction of (im)mobility in the context of a small village in central Mexico. Mobility and immobility are soc…
Is it simpler to leave or to stay put? Desired immobility in a Mexican village
This paper ethnographically explores particular ways of staying put in a Mexican village that builds upon a myriad of present and past mobilities. By doing so, the research contributes to open the black box of rural immobility. Three broad types of stayers are identified: desired, acquiescent, and involuntary stayers. The ethnographic material supports the explanatory power of breaking down the aspiration phase from the realisation one to underst…
Migration, migrants and leisure: Meaningful leisure

From "mud houses" to "wasted houses: Remittances and housing in rural highland Ecuador
Migration is often aimed to build migrants' own house in their places of origin. In rural highland Ecuador remittances sent from the US are habitually used to build houses which have changed the housing landscape of many villages. This paper describes the housing landscape of a village, Xarbán, and how it has changed over the last fifty years due to migration and remittances. It unpacks the reasons why many of the recently built houses remained e…

Linking social and financial remittances in the realms of financial know-how and education in rural Ecuador
This article explores the links between financial and social remittances in the context of Ecuadorian migration to the US and Spain. Ethnographic research on remittance patterns and impacts was carried out in two villages in Southern highland Ecuador. Each site has a different migration and remittance reception profile, in the broad contexts of Ecuadorian regular migration to Spain versus irregular migration to the US. In the specific cases in th…
Migration, Development, Gender and the ‘Black Box’ of Remittances: Comparative Findings from Albania and Ecuador
Set within the growing literature on migration and development, this paper has two interlinked objectives. First, it examines remittances, a key element of the migration-development nexus, from a gendered perspective. Second it does so in a comparative empirical perspective, focusing on remittance behaviour in two contrasting settings, Albania and Ecuador. Both countries have experienced mass emigration in recent decades. Research is based on hou…
