  • Children get sick all the time”

Open Access•Lise Rosendal Østergaard, Pia Juul Bjertrup et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2016

The analysis of case studies, interviews and observations shows how mothers in a rural area struggle and often fail to receive care at public healthcare facilities. Health service delivery could be organized in a manner that responds better to the needs of these mothers in terms of both access and retention

  • Occupational citizenship

    Open Access•Lise Rosendal Østergaard•ARTICLE•Medicine Anthropology Theory•2016

Health workers are an overlooked category in the growing literature on health and citizenship. In this article I describe a 2012-2013 nationwide conflict in the public health care sector in Burkina Faso to explore how ideas about citizenship were mobilized in a situation of political agitation. I examine how public health care is done in a context of material deprivation, technological shortage, and great demand from the population. Three distinc…

  • Tavshedens Dilemma

Helle Samuelsen, Lise Rosendal Østergaard•ARTICLE•Tidsskriftet Antropologi•2012

  • Children at Risk

    Open Access•Lise Rosendal Østergaard, Dan Wolf Meyrowitsch•ARTICLE•Africa Development•2011•References: 4

This paper describes the effect of parental HIV on the life of children in Benin. A total of 2,043 children aged from 10 to 16 were surveyed on health, diet, violence, school attendance and psychosocial state. The results indicate that, while Beninese children who have had a parent living with HIV are not necessarily subjected to different economic and material conditions than those who have not, they do experience a much greater lack of psychoso…

The objective of this study was to provide an in-depth description and analysis of the lived experiences of men in uniforms in Western Rwanda with a view to the links between notions of masculinity, sexual practices and the spread of HIV. A total of 182 members of different uniformed cadres participated in focus group discussions, which were triangulated with findings from discussions held with 136 participants representing other local groups suc…

  • Muted voices

Lise Rosendal Østergaard, Helle Samuelsen•ARTICLE•African Journal of AIDS Research•2004

This article explores the discrepancies between the vocal public discourse on HIV/AIDS and sexuality as generally encouraged by policy-makers and donor communities in Africa, and the often hushed voices of their target groups: young people in African communities. Based on fieldwork among urban youth in Senegal and Burkina Faso, we describe the silence of young people with regard to HIV/AIDS and sexuality as a social phenomenon, with focus given t…
