Examination of Retention and Recall of Polytheistic Versus Monotheistic Religious Concepts
Polytheistic and monotheistic ideas may lead to different processing in the brain, an understudied area generally and firmly within the 4E paradigm, especially in relation to embodiment. This paper uses a recognition memory paradigm to compare electroencephalography (EEG) signals and both reaction time and accuracy during the retrieval of polytheistic and monotheistic god concepts. We use EEG to analyze alpha oscillations whose de-synchronization…
How Tagalog (Filipino) Linguistic Markers Affect the Perception of Supernatural Agency
This paper analyzes theories of supernatural agent (SA) attribution in the cognitive science of religion (CSR) and tests them through an online survey from 40 native Tagalog (Filipino) speakers who currently reside in the Philippines. Tagalog is linguistically distinct in that it uses linguistic markers (genitives; determinatives) to differentiate between human and non-human entities. Therefore, it provides a real language test case of how cognit…
Testing the Relative Influence of Three Key Factors in Mind-Based Models of Religion
The traditional Cognitive Science of Religion ( CSR ) mind-based model suggests that humans understand the world through ontological categories and make socially strategic inferences to avoid threats and focus on utility. This study used an image choice task to test three key factors – category templates, threat, and utility – believed to influence people’s preferences within the CSR framework. The study had three main goals: (1) to refine previo…
Comparing Two Distribution Models of Paul's Literary Techniques
This article explores how literary features are statistically distributed in the Christian apostle Paul's letters. While several decades of occasional research have applied statistics to Paul's letters, most if not all previous such approaches have either assumed that Paul's language follows a normal distribution or ignored the question of statistical distribution entirely. The nature of feature distribution-be the features vocabulary words or se…

Gnostic Thought in Milton’s Paradise Lost
This paper presents the novel argument that John Milton’s Paradise Lost shows clear evidence of Gnostic influence. While the potential influence of gnostic concepts on Milton has been noted before, previous work has been partial, suggestive, and/or limited to other of Milton’s works. Here, we build on the case made by Michael Bryson regarding Milton’s Paradise Regained by providing our own reading of four core themes in the prior Paradise Lost th…
Testing Dioscorides' medicinal clays for their antibacterial properties
De-Spiritualizing Pneuma
This paper is one of several presented at the 2010 sbl naasr session in Atlanta concerning anachronism and translation in the study of early Christianity. It argues that the concept of pneuma ’s central importance to Paul’s thought makes it a prime candidate to remain untranslated in scholarship. Most scholarship on pneuma translates this word ‘Spirit’, which imports normative Christian theological implications. This reflects a modern, Western un…
