  • Checkerboard urbanization

    Open Access•R Vargas, David Hackett•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning B Urban…•2025

Using digitized records from the U.S. General Land Office, we produce a time series map of land sales in early Chicago from 1810 to 1890. The graphic illuminates a checkerboard pattern of land sales adjacent to the Chicago River, which stemmed from a Congressional Act in 1827 funding the Illinois and Michigan Canal. Although previous studies have focused on police foundations moving tens of millions of dollars, the authors' research uncovers a broader, more complex ecosystem of private police financial support. Using a unique data license from GuideStar Candid-all nonprofit organization tax returns from 2014 to 2019-the autho…

How do nonprofit organizations attempt to facilitate collective efficacy? Through an inductive ethnographic case study of efforts to reduce gang violence in the Little Village neighborhood of Chicago, this study shows the importance of power and funding competition. Specifically, nonprofits’ efforts to facilitate collective efficacy depended on (1) strategic actions to manage competitors, and (2) their position in the city political field. Based …
