The Alhambra at the Crossroads of History: Eastern and Western Visions in the Long Nineteenth Century
Throughout the ‘long’ 19 th century, a steadily growing flow of visitors turned the Alhambra into a tourist destination and a major trope of Medievalism and especially Orientalism, created by Western authors and artists from François-René de Chateaubriand to Owen Jones and from Washington Irving to Jean-Léon Gérôme. Yet behind this Western infatuation lie scores of ‘Oriental’ observers of the monument, as revealed by its visitors’ book, kept sinc…
The Alhambra at the Crossroads of History: Eastern and Western Visions in the Long Nineteenth Century
Examines the perception and reception of the Alhambra by Oriental travellers and intellectuals Reverses the conventional view of the Alhambra as a target of the Western gaze by studying Oriental" visitors of the monument and proposes a multi-layered study of perceptions and interactions between multiple actors: Westerners, Spaniards, Andalusians, Arabs from the Maghreb, ‘Turks’, Christian and Muslim Arabs from the Mashreq Based on original and mo…

Alhambra at the Crossroads of History: Eastern and Western Visions in the Long Nineteenth Century
South: Visitors from the Maghreb
The chapter is devoted to Maghrebi visitors of the Alhambra, mostly Moroccan, some early examples of whom were known through their rihla or travel accounts. In the nineteenth century, the visitors’ book documents about 150 such travellers, most of them members of Moroccan diplomatic missions. However, with little more than names and dates available, one has to resort to the local press to flesh out these visits. The Moroccan embassy of 1885 is a …

Rescuing Ottoman History from the Turks
History in Turkey has always been the prey of political and ideological pressures emanating from the state and government. For decades, most of this political ‘monitoring’ was dominated by the Kemalist view of history, which often bypassed or marginalized the Ottoman past. However, the last three decades or so have witnessed a gradual but radical shift, and Ottoman history has made a comeback, to the point of warranting the use of the term ‘neo-O…

The Aesthetics of War: Ottoman Martial Iconography under German Influence
War has always been a catalyst for innovation in the Ottoman Empire, even in the un- likely field of iconography. World War I was such an episode, further exacerbated by the alliance with Germany, a major producer of wartime propaganda. This contribution retraces the development of state symbolism in the Ottoman Empire throughout the nineteenth century, especially with respect to medals and decorations, before focusing on the production of images…

Early Ottoman Archaeology: Rediscovering the Finds of Ascalon (Ashkelon), 1847
Very little is known about the acquisitions of the (Ottoman) Imperial Museum during the first decades of its existence. As a consequence of the haphazard way in which objects were collected and the absence of any form of institutionalization, the collections inherited from this early period generally lack the most basic contextual information concerning their provenance, date of entry, and mode of acquisition. Nevertheless, historical and archiva…

A shameful debate? A critical reassessment of the 'Torossian debate
For years now, a debate has been going on concerning the memoirs of Sarkis Torossian, published in 1947, and republished in a commented Turkish version in 2012. This latter publication sparked a debate among a number of Turkish historians, divided over the reliability or not of Torossian's account of his participation in the Ottoman war effort as an officer, and his subsequent desertion following the realization that most of his family had fallen…
Ottoman financial integration with Europe: Foreign loans, the Ottoman Bank and the Ottoman public debt
Between 1854 and 1881, the Ottoman Empire went through one of the most critical phases of the history of its relations with European powers. Beginning with the first foreign loan contracted in 1854, this process was initially dominated by a modest level of indebtedness, coupled with sporadic and inconsequential attempts by western powers to impose some control over the viability of the operation. From 1863 on, a second and much more intense phase…

The final purpose will therefore be that of looking into rapports de force between the Ottoman and French economies at a general level, but also that of addressing problems of commercial practices, behaviour and mentality at a mor…

Capitulations and Western trade
The issue of Western trade and that of its legal framework, the capitulations, has always been viewed as crucial in the understanding of certain transformations undergone by the Ottoman Empire in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The implicit argument behind these statements is that, in the long run, Western trade and economic presence in the Levant has worked towards the gradual integration of the Ottoman Empire into an economic system t…

Ottoman and Turkish Orientalism
Since the early decades of the 19th century, Turkey has undergone successive programmes of modernisation that have closely identified reform with Westernisation and its implied European ‘success and superiority’ over Turkish culture. Here Edhem Eldem reveals both the external and internal dynamic of Turkish Orientalism, which has proved such a complex multilayered process with an enduring influence on how Turkish society and elites view themselve…
Making Sense of Osman Hamdi̇ Bey and His Paintings
This article aims at revisiting recent scholarship on the Ottoman painter and archaeologist Osman Hamdi Bey (1842–1910) and proposes a critical reassessment of the way in which some of his major paintings have been analyzed. The central argument is that studies of his oeuvre have relied mostly on interpretation, while failing to exhaust the explanatory potential of still partly untapped sources. In an effort to redress this imbalance, a number of…
