Heritage without people, heritage without time
This article situates the current Egyptian regime’s de facto rejection of adaptive reuse or participatory preservation projects within the lineage of colonial notions of heritage. Much like its colonial predecessors, the regime deals with heritage as its private property, deploying brutal authoritarian capabilities in an intense ongoing campaign to extract revenue from every possible source. Unlike its colonial predecessors, however, the current …

The Long Divergence: How Islamic Law Held Back the Middle East. Trading in Power
In this article, I argue that commercial legislation promulgated and implemented in Egypt during the first half of the 19th century was one of several factors that diminished the effect of merchants’ social networks, reduced merchants’ identity to a purely professional dimension, and made profit dependent upon association with the state. The transformation of merchants’ social roles was not part of a natural evolution toward modernization and the…

Cash and Kin Go to Court
Court records have offered historians an unparalleled source of information about the Ottoman period, particularly in the Empire's Arab provinces, where abundant documentation tells us about society's material conditions. As far as family history is concerned, Ottoman courts have yielded much important information regarding women's rights and status, as revealed in marriage contracts recorded before the Ottoman qadi. In the field of economic and …
The War for Muslim Minds
The events of September 11, 2001, forever changed the world as we knew it. In their wake, the quest for international order has prompted a reshuffling of global aims and priorities. In a fresh approach, Gilles Kepel focuses on the Middle East as a nexus of international disorder and decodes the complex language of war, propaganda, and terrorism that holds the region in its thrall. The breakdown of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process in 2000 was…
Commis, artisans, ouvriers.
