Max Weber on parliamentarism and democracy
Democracy and parliamentarism have different and partly opposed histories. In Britain parliamentary government preceded the democratisation of the suffrage, in Germany the Reichstag was elected with manhood suffrage but parliamentarism was suspicious. During the early years of the 20th century several attempts to parliamentarise the government were made, although the federal structure and the Prussian domination within it made them difficult. In …
"Conceptual Explorations around "Politics: Thematizing the Activity of Politics in the Plenary Debates of the German Bundestag
This article discusses the ways of conceptualizing politics in parliamentary debates. When the politics-vocabulary is ubiquitous in them, which kind of speech act lies in emphasizing the political aspect? Focusing on thematized uses allows us to identify conceptual revisions in the politics-vocabulary in digitalized plenary debates of the German Bundestag from 1949 to 2017. My fourfold scheme for conceptualizing politics (polity, policy, politici…

The Supranational Dimension in Max Weber’s Vision of Politics
Max Weber analyzed politics from the perspective of Chancen for actors, and he never separated world politics from domestic politics. The “Westphalian balance” between great European powers shaped Weber’s views on international polity. However, he also regarded Western individualism, human rights, and parliamentary democracy as necessary qualities to possess in order to be recognized as a great power. This vision provided the basis for his wartim…

Rethinking Political Representation from the Perspective of Rhetorical Genres
This article is a thought experiment. It constructs ideal types of political representation in the sense of Max Weber. Inspired by Quentin Skinner and others, the aim is to give a rhetorical turn to contemporary debates on representation. The core idea is to claim an ‘elective affinity’ (Wahlverwandschaft, as Weber says following Goethe) between forms of representation and rhetorical genres of their justification. The four ideal types of politica…
Rethinking Politicisation
Politicisation, in a broad and basic understanding, means to turn something – an issue, an institution, a policy – that previously was not a subject to political action into something that now is subject to political action. So far, most definitions of the concept would agree. But besides this basic approach, there is much discussion: Politicisation is a concept that is currently much used in the social sciences, and also a concept that is contes…
Four aspects of politics in Max Weber's Politik als Beruf
The article offers a rereading of Weber's Politik als Beruf as a conceptualisation of politics contingent and controversial activity in terms of the four aspects of politics: politicisation, polity, politicking and policy. Weber discusses politics as a concept abstracted from its content. All four aspects can be found in his exposition of the concept. Weber mentions first policy as the direction of politics and demarcates his focus on the state-t…

Parliament and Parliamentarism
Parliamentary theory, practices, discourses, and institutions constitute a distinctively European contribution to modern politics. Taking a broad historical perspective, this cross-disciplinary, innovative, and rigorous collection locates the essence of parliamentarism in four key aspects—deliberation, representation, responsibility, and sovereignty—and explores the different ways in which they have been contested, reshaped, and implemented in a …

The History of Concepts as a Style of Political Theorizing: Quentin Skinner's and Reinhart Koselleck's Subversion of Normative Political Theory
The history of concepts has partly replaced the older style of the `history of ideas' and can be extended to a critique of normative political theory and, thereby, understood as an indirect style of political theorizing. A common feature in Quentin Skinner's and Reinhart Koselleck's writings lies in their critique of the unhistorical and depoliticizing use of concepts. This concerns especially the classical contractarian theories, and both author…

Political Theorizing as a Dimension of Political Life
Quentin Skinner’s thesis ‘that political life itself sets the main problems for the political theorist’ marks a turning point in the study of the history of political thought. The Protestant princes who revised Luther’s doctrine of disobedience in order to save Lutheranism as a political force are the best example of this ‘Skinnerian revolution’ in The Foundations of Modern Political Thought. This is in accordance with his claim that principles p…
Two Concepts of Politics: Conceptual History and Present Controversies
In contemporary debates we may distinguish a number of individual conceptions of politics, which, however, can be understood as versions of combinations of two and only two concepts of politics. I will call the two the sphere-concept and the activity-concept. Although they on most occasions are closely intertwined, they refer to two distinct concepts, both of which are regularly evoked but seldom clearly distinguished from each other either in th…
Politics or the Political? An Historical Perspective on a Contemporary Non-Debate
Conceptualisations of ‘the political’ and ‘politics’ tend to diverge quite significantly from one another in contemporary literature. The origins of this split can be traced back to the works of Carl Schmitt and Max Weber. By accentuating the opposition between these conceptions, we are able to detect two different attitudes toward politics. The Schmittian ideal of the political longs for stability that extends beyond the daily quarrels of politi…

The State as a 'Chance' Concept: Max Weber's de-substantialisation and neutralisation of the concept
The article asks in what ways the recent publication of Weber's last, interrupted lecture series from 1920 contributes to our understanding of his concept of the state? Whereas Gangolf Hübinger in his preface and editorial remarks of MWG III/7 thematizes the political, intellectual, disciplinary and university historical contexts of the lectures, I concentrate on Weber's break with the conventions in the German history of the concept of the state…
Max Weber's Rhetoric of 'Objectivity: The Parliament as a Paradigm for Scholarly Disputes
In this essay, Max Weber's classical 1904 essay on 'Objectivity' is revisited from a rhetorical perspective. When Weber speaks of 'objectivity', he is referring to the Methodenstreit in the economics of his time from the broader viewpoint of discussing the modes of conducting scholarly disputes in general. He insists that the struggle between opposing standpoints and their supporters, which is widely accepted politics, should also be revalued in …

The Two Faces of Contingency
The work of Pierre Rosanvallon is discussed here from the perspective of the conceptual history of "politics" (La Politique) and of "the political" (La Politique). In Rosanvallon's early work in the second half of the 1970s, there is a marked defence of the autonomy of politics, as a manifestation of contingency, against the language of "society," then dominant in the social sciences and philosophy. Since the 1980s, Le Politique become a fashiona…
Sombart and Weber on Professional Politicians
Max Weber's concept of Beruf is manifested in his view on politics both as a profession and vocation. The democratization of suffrage led to the rise of new types of politicians living off politics, who were fiercely criticized in the early-twentieth century. Werner Sombart's series of articles in 1907 offers us a 'representative anecdote' of this criticism. He combines idealistic, positivistic and syndicalistic disgust for the parliamentary and …
The Politics of Conceptual History
The author argues that conceptual history is becoming increasingly indispensable due to the historical trend in political practices to move from a politics of answers to given questions to a politics of thematizing the questions themselves, that is, of agenda-setting. The very understanding of a certain question as contingent and controversial marks a politicizing change in the agenda. From the perspective of the history of concepts, the formulat…
Rehabilitating the Politician on a Neglected Genre in Political Theorizing
The relatively rare defences of politicians, responding to commonplace denounciations, form a neglected genre of political theorizing. Max Weber's famous 'Politik als Beruf' (1919) serves here as a point of departure for the analysis of the examples of Louis Barthou, F.C. Oliver, J.D.B. Miller and Jean-Paul Sartre. The rehabilitation signifies a conceptual change through rhetorical redescription, as suggested by Quentin Skinner

Introduction: Reflections on Political Thought in Finland
Redescriptions: Political Thought, Conceptual History and Feminist Theory is an international refereed open access journal, which publishes contributions on the transdisciplinary study of concepts. The journal draws attention to conceptual moves within political theory, conceptual history and feminist thought, and highlig…
The Machiavellian moment heißt eine bekannte Arbeit von J.G.A. Zur Bedeutung des Titels schreibt Pocock: The Machiavellian moment denotes the problem itself. It is a name for the mom…
Was ist neu daran?
