The Swedish “experiment” with marketization
The educational reforms that encompassed school choice, vouchers, and for-profit private schools in Sweden during the 1990s transformed the public comprehensive school system through a process of marketization. The focus of this study is Sweden's largest urban upper secondary school market, the Stockholm region, following these reforms for nearly 30 years. The aim was to examine the relationship between school choice, school, and residential segr…
A typology of schools across the four nations of the United Kingdom
In this paper we analyse the hierarchical field of schools across the United Kingdom during the transition to university and suggest that there are five socially distinct clusters of schools. Our five‐cluster typology of UK schools is composed of an established group of elite private and state schools, schools for the white rural and suburban middle class, schools serving the (post‐)industrial and predominantly white working class in small towns,…

Levelling up' social mobility? Comparing the social and spatial mobility for university graduates across districts of Britain

Complementing other recent work, in this paper we explore these patterns in relation to higher education. Making use of high-quality data from the higher education statistics agency (HESA), we ran a set of multilevel models to test whether the local authority areas where young people grow up influence social and spatial mobility into a higher profe…
Class-based preschool enrolment - social stratification and quality differences in the Swedish preschool market
In this article, we analyse overarching patterns of social stratification in, and quality differences between, Swedish preschools. Drawing on a Bourdieusian social classification scheme, we evidence in what type of preschools different social groups enrol their children in, and to what extent Swedish preschool children encounter different levels of quality at municipal, for-profit and non-profit providers in the preschool market. The analysis emp…
Even in preschools
Preschool segregation has not been the focus of research efforts to the same extent as compulsory school segregation. This is at least in part a consequence of the lack of large-scale, registry-based data sources on where children live and where they attend preschool. This paper presents a full-population account of discrepancies between preschool segregation and neighbourhood segregation covering the Swedish population. Data includes preschool c…
School competition and social stratification in the deregulated upper secondary school market in Stockholm
Drawing on the case of upper secondary education in Stockholm, this article analyses school-based responses to a superimposed market and how this is related to social stratification. Furthermore, schools’ and pupils’ encounters with the market are analysed in relation to Bourdieu’s concepts of field, capital and strategy. Methodologically, the quantitative method of correspondence analysis is combined with semi-structured interviews with senior a…
