Change-Point Detection in Time Series Using Mixed Integer Programming
We use cutting-edge mixed integer optimization (MIO) methods to develop a framework for detection and estimation of structural breaks in time series regression models. The framework is constructed based on the least squares problem subject to a penalty on the number of breakpoints. We restate the l0-penalized regression problem as a quadratic programming problem with integer- and real-valued arguments and show that MIO is capable of finding prova…
The Pixar Hero's Journey
Vladimir Propp's Morphology of the Folktale and Joseph Campbell's The Hero with a Thousand Faces are the most famous and influential scholarly works describing the universal patterns of the hero's journey. However, there are no specific case studies comparing them. This research applies both schemes concurrently in the analysis of Pixar feature‐length animated films, with a particular focus on Coco (2017). The analysis of specific cases reveals h…
The reversed monomyth in a queer Russian web series
This article explores Here I Come, a web series released on YouTube in November 2020 and the only fictional queer web series in Russia since 2013. The starting point of the study is a narrative analysis of the plot structure using the monomyth scheme, proposed by Joseph Campbell in 1949. The analysis shows the creators performed a reversal of the standard hero’s journey resulting in a plot that both deviates from and conforms to Campbell’s monomy…

The Hero’s Journey and Three Types of Metaphor in Pixar Animation
Despite the fact that cinema and animation have common features, one of the fundamental differences between them is that animation uses metaphors much more freely. This current study explores this feature of animation and analyzes how the use of metaphors affects the narrative and plot structure of full- and short-length animation. The study is based on the narrative analysis of eight films made by Pixar Animation Studio, as a successful company …
A Simple Estimator of Two‐Dimensional Copulas, with Applications1
Copulas are distributions with uniform marginals. Non‐parametric copula estimates may violate the uniformity condition in finite samples. We look at whether it is possible to obtain valid piecewise linear copula densities by triangulation. The copula property imposes strict constraints on design points, making an equi‐spaced grid a natural starting point. However, the mixed‐integer nature of the problem makes a pure triangulation approach impract…
On a Grave Symbol from Northwest Belarus
The article focuses on an interpretation of a funeral symbol found on the gravestones in Northwest Belarus -an engraved image of a pole with a semicircle at its top. The gravestones are connected to the archaeological culture of stone tombs of Yotvingian origin. Possibly, this symbol has been given a wider perspective in the world of late paganism of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and its neighboring territories. This symbol represents an idea of '…
