Defying the Odds: Remittances during the Covid-19 Pandemic
This paper provides an early assessment of the dynamics and drivers of remittances during the COVID-19 pandemic, using a newly compiled monthly remittance dataset for a sample of 52 countries, of which 16 countries have bilateral remittance data. The paper documents a strong resilience in remittance flows, notwithstanding an unprecedent global recession triggered by the pandemic. Using the local projection approach to estimate the impulse respons…
The impact of conflict and political instability on banking crises in developing countries
While there is an extensive literature examining the economic impact of conflict and political instability, surprisingly, there have been few studies on their impact on the probability of banking crises. This paper therefore investigates whether rising conflict and political instability globally over the past several decades led to increased occurrence of banking crises in developing countries. The paper provides strong evidence that conflicts an…
Inflation targeting adoption and institutional quality: Evidence from developing countries
Institutional quality is often emphasised as an engine of economic development in developing countries. However, most of the literature assumes that institutions are exogenous. In this paper, we adopt the opposite view, and study the way the design of the monetary regime, and specifically the adoption of an inflation targeting regime, can impact the quality of institutions. Using the propensity scores matching method, which allows controlling for…
Inflation Targeting, Fiscal Rules and the Policy Mix: Cross‐effects and Interactions
We examine how inflation targeting (IT) and fiscal rules (FR) affect inflation and fiscal performance in a large panel of countries during 1990–2009. In line with theory, both FR and IT appear to shape monetary and fiscal outcomes. Significant cross‐effects seem to exist as IT strengthens fiscal performance, whereas the combination of FR and IT tends to be associated with more disciplined macroeconomic policies than if only one of these instituti…

The end of textiles quotas: A case study of the impact on Bangladesh
This paper assesses the effects on the Bangladeshi economy of phasing out textile and clothing quotas by industrial countries. Bangladesh relies heavily on textile and clothing exports and is potentially very vulnerable to the abolition of the quotas. We used up-to-date information on quota prices for Bangladesh to evaluate its competitiveness in a quota-free world, and subsequently incorporate the quota price information in the GTAP model to sim…
