This study explores the linguistic landscape (LL) of Tibetan language in Xinduqiao Town, Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, China. Although Tibetan is often regarded as a strong ethnic language in China, the sociolinguistic dynamics in Xinduqiao present a different narrative due to sustained Han-Tibetan contact and accelerated economic, demographic, and tourism-driven transformations. By adopting a combined quantitative and qu…

Tourism, commodification of Dongba script and perceptions of the Naxi minority in the linguistic landscape of Lijiang: A diachronic perspective
Ongoing debates in the field of sociolinguistics are centred around the implications of the commodification of the languages and cultures of ethnic minorities. Previous research has adopted synchronic approaches to describing how ideologies of tourist consumption shape language choices in the linguistic landscape. However, such snapshot analyses have proved to be inadequate in revealing changes in the linguistic landscape over time, especially th…

Language change and multilingualism in an ethnic city in China: A diachronic linguistic landscape perspective
This study adopts an apparent-time diachronic linguistic landscape (LL) approach to investigate the vitality of an ethnic minority language in China, namely the Nuosu Yi (诺苏彝). Diachronic LL research is concerned with changes in language use on signage over time. It provides insights into phenomena such as language shift, which is challenging to be unveiled through synchronic research. This study collected a total of 1233 signboards, which were m…

Linguistic landscape as a way to reflect the tension between mandated language policies and residents’ language preferences: The case of Kashgar in China
Recent linguistic landscape (LL) research has witnessed a change in focus to untypical, peripheral and fluid signs. Compared to typical (or permanent, fixed, etc.) signs which tend to be subject to strong policy intervention, language use on untypical signs is often more autonomous, thus could better reflect the de facto language choice and preferences of local residents. Comparing the linguistic patterns between typical and untypical signs there…
Does Physical Activity Predict Obesity—A Machine Learning and Statistical Method-Based Analysis
Physical activity was an important factor in predicting weight status, with gender, age, and race/ethnicity being less but still essential factors associated with weight outcomes. Tailored intervention policies and programs should target the differences rooted in these demographic factors to curb the increase in the prevalence of obesity and reduce disparities among sub-demographic populations
Housing Poverty and Healthy Aging in China: Evidence from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study
The association between housing poverty and CHAI is independent of household expenditure. Regardless of type, housing poverty is positively associated with a decrease in healthy aging. Thus, improved housing conditions boost healthy aging, and housing amelioration initiatives may offer the most effective solution for augmenting healthy aging in China. Improvement of flush toilets and the access to potable water and a separate kitchen require part…
