Being/Having a Muslim Voice
This article investigates attempts at, and the implications of, speaking publicly for Islam in Denmark, with special attention to the notion of “voice.” First, I present a theoretical framework for an analytical focus on voice, and develop a distinction between “being” and “having” a voice. In the analysis that follows, I focus on three recent Danish podcast series produced by and featuring Muslims that to various extents all address issues relat…
Nearness to God
This article advocates for an increased attention to how piously striving Muslims learn about, cultivate, and experience nearness to God. The empirical material is taken from our current research on Danish Muslims’ engagement with Islamic teaching and learning. We examine examples of oral teachings that instruct the audience to be constantly aware of God and address him directly in prayer, examples of how an awareness of God is cultivated and pra…
Limits, Genealogies, and Openings
This article, which introduces a special collection of articles, is intended to invite scholarly reflection on the study of religion in the present day. We believe that a meaningful conversation about what happens when we engage religion for scholarly purposes forces us to consider the ways in which the very category 'religion' shapes our research interests and scholarly communities. A focus on 'engagements' is furthermore useful as we seek an op…
Salafi Sufism
The aim of this article is to analyse a local expression of the transnational Ahbash Sufi movement in light of recent scholarship on the relationship between Salafism and Sufism as well as Islamic neo-traditionalism. Some researchers have reacted against a dichotomous relationship between fundamentalism and Sufism, instead suggesting a continuum and a mutual interdependence. We aim to contribute to a developed understanding of the process whereby…
Muslim Youth, Education, and Islam in Britain
This review essay discusses four recently published books that in various ways concern Islam and Muslims in Britain, especially Muslim youth. Particular attention is paid to the two issues of generation and education, which are central in the reviewed books and provide fruitful conceptual frames for analysing Muslims in Europe
Att höra röster
English abstract: This article describes and discusses an ongoing attempt to listen better to the meaning-making potential that is not only inherent in words, but also in human speech’s auditory dimensions. Through a presentation of three chronologically ordered phases of listening, with particular focus on various forms of Muslim preaching, a string of fruitful analytical paths for aurally oriented studies of religion are expounded. The empirica…
DIY Preaching and Muslim Religious Authority
This article investigates how a particular type of Muslim preacher, here conceptualised as a ‘do-it-yourself ( DIY ) preacher’, can propagate for and elaborate on Islamic teachings outside of and supplementary to mosques. A variety of physical and media spaces are used to reach audiences, especially youth, with religious messages. The article uses an analytical lens of DIY media, generational differences, religious authority and organic intellect…
Muslim religious oratory on Swedish public service radio
This article analyses religious Morning Services, delivered by eight Muslim speakers, broadcast on Swedish public service radio during 2013 and 2014. Morning Services have been broadcast on Swedish radio since 1930, but only in recent years have non-Christian speakers been invited to contribute. Inviting religious minority speakers is understood as a strategy for incorporating selected representatives of religious minorities into hegemonic practi…
The Centre of the Universe
This article presents and analyses the environment around Shaykh Muhammad Nazim Adil al-Haqqani (1922-2014) in Lefke, Cyprus. The Shaykh was leader of a branch of the Naqshbandiyya between 1973 and 2014. His murids have viewed their visits to the Shaykh’s home as spiritual highlights. Some have moved there permanently. Based on ethnographic material collected during four visits to Lefke between 2008 and 2014, as well as material distributed onlin…
