Brexit, borders, and negotiations of jazz musicians in London
Jazz is a genre that relies on live performances and transnational touring. Brexit—Britain leaving the European Union in January 2021—was expected to have an impact on the British jazz musicians’ movement and international work. The political decisions seemed to take Britain back to an era before the freedom of movement. While the direct impact of Brexit was further complicated and hidden by the COVID-19 epidemic, British jazz musicians were alre…
Ringing Tone and Drumming Sages in the Crevice Cave of Pirunkirkko, Koli, Finland
Pirunkirkko (“Devil’s Church”) is one of the famous caves in Finland. Tradition says that this crevice leading into the mountain was a meeting place for sages, who typically used sound to contact the spirit world. Today, the place is visited by practitioners of shamanism, who organise drumming sessions at the back of the cave. This article examines Pirunkirkko and the related traditions from the perspective of acoustics, hypothesising that the ac…
Covid-19 and British Jazz Musicians
Jazz is a genre that relies heavily on live performance. It is therefore understandable that the COVID-19 related lockdown greatly affected jazz musicians. In this article, I reflect on London-based jazz musicians’ stories by using the idea of “liminal state”, as conceptualized by Arnold van Gennep (1960) and Victor Turner (1982), examining how they described the lockdown, in particular the financial and emotional impacts it had on them. Between …

Change in the Researcher's Position in the Study of Shamanism
Since the 1960s, shamanism has become one of the landmarks for a new way of life and a more respectful relationship of humans with nature in the Western world. Both researchers and practitioners regard the foundation of shamanism as being animism - an understanding of the connection of all living beings. The role of the community is highlighted in shamanism as the shaman is expected to work for his community. Shamanistic techniques vary according…

The Role of Anthropological Literature in Contemporary Shamanic Practices
Anthropology and anthropological literature have had an irreversible effect on the practice of contemporary shamanism. In this small-scale study, I look at the complex ways the literature has been recorded, initiated interest, revived and verified the shamanic practices. Over the years, anthropologists have also caused distortions in revived practices as they have left some things unrecorded. On the basis of written responses and interviews from …
