  • Conversion to bodybuilding

    Open Access•Ronan Coquet, F Ohl et al.•ARTICLE•International Review for the…•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 27

This article aims to study the process of conversion to bodybuilding in order to understand how some gym enthusiasts progressively organise their lives around this activity. Our observations, drawn from an ethnography of a gym and 30 semi-structured interviews with different profiles of gym-goers in French-speaking Switzerland, suggest that the grip that bodybuilding takes on individuals results from processes akin to conversions. Two paths to co…

  • The metamorphosis of female bodybuilders

    Open Access•Peggy Roussel, Lee F Monaghan et al.•ARTICLE•International Review for the…•2010•Cited by: 8•References: 11

Female bodybuilding raises an obvious question: how should we judge these metamorphosized bodies and associated practices? We will reframe this question as part of a short communication on what many people judge to be a paroxysmal body that is deservedly discredited. Drawing from Kant's distinction between 'free beauty' and 'adherent beauty', our commentary revolves around the notion of aesthetic judgment. Different expressions of this are consid…

  • Le muscle au service de la « beauté »

    Open Access•Peggy Roussel, Jean Griffet•ARTICLE•Recherches féministes•2004

  • The Decline of Female Bodybuilding in France

Peggy Roussel, Jean Griffet et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Sport Journal•2003•Cited by: 6•References: 6

The present article examines the transformations that have taken place in female bodybuilding in France from a sociological point of view. Adopting a comprehensive approach, we describe the contextual influences thought to be responsible for the decline of female bodybuilding. Starting from the premise that the extremely muscular female bodies seen in women’s bodybuilding are the reason for the downfall of the discipline, the analysis focuses on …

  • The Path Chosen by Female Bodybuilders

Peggy Roussel, Jean Griffet•ARTICLE•Sociology of Sport Journal•2000•Cited by: 14•References: 5

This paper suggests that the process of marginalization of women bodybuilders can be analyzed according to two theoretical frameworks. The first is essentially a pessimistic interpretation based on critical sociology and the concept of alienation, which discusses the limits of applying this concept to an empirical reality (in this case, female bodybuilders). The second considers the future of female bodybuilders as being constructed through the m…

  • Le sport ludique

    Jean Griffet, Peggy Roussel•ARTICLE•Agora débats/jeunesses•1999•Cited by: 2•References: 1

To understand young people motives for practicing sports is no longer possible to appeal to founding values of modernity like search for improvement, control of oneself and the environment, surpassing the other and achievement of this emblematic form of confrontation represented by practicing sports in an institutional context. The growing importance of sport activities is justified by its recreational intensity, the feelings encountered and the …
