The Power of the People
After the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, the founders of the Turkish Republic undertook an ambitious modernization and nation-building project under an authoritarian single-party rule. The literature about the first two decades of Turkey is vast. Scholars from various disciplines have examined in detail the various coercive policies and goals of the Kemalist leaders, their ideological mindset, and the power struggles among them. In The Power of …
The Politics of Emotions and Spectacles
This article examines the Turkish Language Olympiads as a political-performative strategy that the Muslim nationalists used to communicate their ideology. I argue that to understand the rise of Muslim nationalism, we also need to understand how emotional appeal is created through spectacles like the Turkish Olympiads. The spectacle was effective in boosting people’s sense of national pride and self-confidence by resolving two important tensions o…
Public Tears
This article analyzes the increased visibility and frequency of public weeping by the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. This article analyzes the exercise of state authority in Kurdish areas in the early Turkish Republic and discusses the state's ineffectiveness in dominating these areas. It argues that the mere existence of a highly ambitious social-engineering project, increased state presence in the region, and military power does not mean high levels of state capacity. Based on primary documents, this article discusses the problems of autonomy, coherence, and …
Incoherent State
This article analyzes contention over Kurdish naming in Turkey. It explores why there has been increased contention over naming between Kurdish activists and Turkish state authorities since the 1980s. First, it underlines the incoherent state responses to the issue of Kurdish naming and calls attention to the role of the local state officials in the escalation of naming controversy. In particular, the paper analyzes the dissonance between the rul…
Citizen, Speak Turkish
This article analyzes one of the attempts to broaden the use of the Turkish language during the first two decades of the Turkish Republic in order to create a homogeneous nation-state. The “Citizen, Speak Turkish!” campaign, which aimed to put pressure on non-Turkish speakers to speak Turkish in public, shows that a state-centered analysis is inadequate to explain the nation-building process in Turkey. This article demonstrates how the official T…
