Has It Made Any Difference
The impact of the cease fire is addressed by examining the geography of troubles-related fatal incidents since 1985. This provides a period of 9 years both before and after the cease fire for comparison. The substantial decline in violence in Northern Ireland as a whole has a clear geographical pattern, with the rural nonmetropolitan zone experiencing a much steeper fall than Belfast and elsewhere. This paper considers the relationship between census data on religious affiliation, and the ethnic structure of Northern Ireland. Examination of the 1991 Census Sample of Anonymised Records suggests that as well as the major unambiguously ethnic Catholic and Protestant groups, three other groups can be identified: those born in Northern Ireland who have No Religion, those born in Northern Ireland who do not declare a religion, and those from outs…

Ethnic Residential Segregation in Belfast, Northern Ireland, 1971-1991
The segregation of Catholics and Protestants varies spatially and temporally in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Using small‐area statistics from the censuses of 1971, 1981, and 1991, taken during the recent "Troubles," a strongly rising level of ethnic segregation is noted for the 1970s, followed by a more gentle rise in the 1980s.
