Finance becoming (tech) in socio-technical interaction orders: The case of digital everyday financial practices
Discussing recent literature on online financial practices, this article argues that ‘finance becoming tech’ assumes the form of particular financial situations in the everyday, to be understood in terms of Erving Goffman’s concept of interaction order . While the interactionist strand in the social study of finance foregrounds the role of techno-social situations in the constitution of finance, this article suggests applying Goffman’s notion of …
Infrastructures and Capitalist World Ordering
In this forum, we employ infrastructures as an analytical lens to explore contemporary world ordering, which we root in the dynamics of capitalism. Beyond enabling mobility and facilitating capital's expansionist transgression of social and geographical barriers, we show how the current densification and expansion of infrastructures are actively undermining the imaginary of a world ordered through spatially bounded, internally unified entities. I…
Non-Traditional Finance and the Infrastructural Imagination of Geoeconomic Hegemony: The Case of Russia’s War in Ukraine
Against the background of the war waged by Russia against Ukraine, this paper addresses the role of non-traditional financial infrastructures in geopolitical struggles that are conducted by geoeconomic means. Non-traditional finance (in the following: NTF),1 like cryptocurrencies, crypto exchanges, and related services, promises to provide financial security—for instance, in terms of payments—outside of traditional financial infrastructures. NTF …
When transactions turn awry: Infrastructural ambivalence in financial security
This article conceptualizes financial transactions as parts of financial infrastructures. Not only do transactions perform services for the economy, mainly in the area of calculation and pricing, but there is also merit in a conceptually infrastructural view on transactions which uncovers their ambivalence for the stability of the financial system. This is based on a conceptualization of infrastructures that distances itself from inherited modern…
Republican Freedom and Committees of Safety: Notes on Historicization in Critical Security Studies
This paper discusses the historical case of committees of safety and their role in three republican revolutions in early modern western political history in order to conceptually contribute to the historicization of critical security studies. These committees were significant in amalgamating republican understandings of public freedom with demands for security from tyrannical oppression, thus highlighting the constitutive role of security conside…
From post-war reconciliation to European integration? Competing historicities of ‘exchange’ in European small-town twinning
Town twinning is often seen as a linear driving force of European integration. This article argues that town twinning’s historicity is more complex. The initial post-war period, according to today’s practitioners’ accounts, was characterized by a high degree of personal involvement which transformed into an exposure to relationship uncertainty. By way of contrast, twinning practices since the 1990s are reported as being driven by a more manageria…
Topologies of security: Inquiring in/Security Across Postcolonial and Postsocialist Scenes
Postcolonial and postsocialist thought has critiqued Critical Security Studies (CSS) on its Eurocentric orientation in terms of its concepts, categories, and concerns of security. In this introductory text, we discuss a concept in tension – topology/scene – to deepen a dialogue between postcolonial and postsocialist scholarship alongside insights from Science and Technology Studies (STS). Drawing on various contributions, we demonstrate how topol…

Legacies and problematics of microsociology in the Social Studies of Finance
Erving Goffman's work is often read as a quasi-anthropology of social interactions, disclosing the fundamental micro-processes of sociality. This paper argues that his work ought rather to caution sociologists against axiomatics regarding the micro-ontology of social order, and attempts to rescue from Goffman's work references to the vanishing and transformation of social order. An example of the relevance of this attempt is research in the socia…
Making uncertainty operable: Social Coordination Through Game Theory in Decentralized Finance
As blockchain technologies are discussed in their political dimensions, this paper questions the political implications of developments in decentralized finance (DeFi). It looks at the ways that DeFi projects refer to game theory as a template for designing the integration of off-chain financial processes into on-chain processes. DeFi’s reference to game theory carries normative understandings of social coordination that oscillate between (libera…

Securing the separation between state and finance: Entanglements between securitization and societal differentiation
This paper discusses interventions by Max Weber in order to consider how sociological understandings of societal differentiation – most importantly, between the state and the financial economy – can be framed in terms of ‘securitization’ as proposed by critical security studies (CSS). I engage with relevant IR and IPE literature in two ways. First, I refer to IR approaches to securitization, which relate their arguments to theories of societal di…
More Lessons to Learn: Thomas Piketty’s Capital and Ideology and Alternative Archives of Social Experience
Thomas Piketty’s Capital and Ideology has been written with the intention to offer lessons from the historical trajectory of economic redistribution in societies the world over. Thereby, the book suggests learning from the political-economic history of ‘social-democratic’ policies and societal arrangements. While the data presented speak to the plausibility of looking at social democracy, as understood by Piketty, as an archive for learning about…

Articulating Sovereignty within the Infrastructural Imagination: The Case of the Securitisation of Finance as ‘Critical Infrastructure
Since the 1990s, financial markets have been labelled 'critical infrastructures,' putting them on par with other macro-functions deemed vital for the constitution and continuation of contemporary. This paper argues that, this discursive move signals a securitisation of finance that, together with an infrastructural imaginary of society, produces new articulations of and new claims to political sovereignty. The notion of 'infrastructure' is bound …

Sources of financial synchronism: Arbitrage theory and the promise of risk-free profit
This article argues that the temporality of the financial economy ought to be seen as radically synchronistic. 'Synchronism' refers to both an epistemological and practical approach that addresses finance neither with a view to the past nor to the future, but is instead focused on the moment that a financial transaction is settled (i.e., the horizon of trading). From this perspective, the article expands the scope of current social theorizing on …

Securities markets and political securitization: The case of the sovereign debt crisis in the Eurozone
What were the effects of securities markets’ dynamics on the issue of political securitization, in the sense of the Copenhagen School, in the context of the sovereign debt crisis in the European Monetary Union (EMU)? This article addresses that question in an attempt to bring together the theory of political securitization and the financial securitization of government bonds. In conceptual terms, the article argues that the intervention of securi…
Modular sovereignty, security, and debt: The Excessive Deficit Procedure of the European Union
The Excessive Deficit Procedure (EDP) is a political mechanism that aims at ‘multilevel governance’ of state indebtedness in the European Union. As such, it has become the concern of research that asks how sovereignty becomes articulated in this process. This article approaches this question through the conceptualization of a modular notion of sovereignty elaborated through a discussion of work on the finance-security nexus. The article argues th…

The Merits of Reciprocity: Small-town Twinning in the Wake of the Second World War
This paper argues that the sociality of town twinning in Europe since the Second World War has been organized around relationships of reciprocal exchange, for instance, the exchange of visits, hospitality, and gifts. While the paper empirically refers to a qualitative study of forms of twinning sociality in small towns in Germany, it conceptually frames the findings in terms of anthropological theories of exchange. The latter are relevant for the…

How to change other people's institutions: Discursive entrepreneurship and the boundary object of competition/competitiveness in the German banking sector
The paper explores recent public debates about the structure of the financial system in Germany. It pays particular attention to their symbolic-strategic dimension, that is, to attempts by several institutional entrepreneurs to reformulate the criteria of organizational legitimacy, concentrating on the sense-making and legitimization processes involved in institutional persistence or change.
