For special purposes only: Ceramic casting moulds from the late Bronze and Early Iron Age metallurgical workshop in Grzybiany (SW Poland)
Ceramic moulds are regarded as highly specialised, refractory tools used in metallurgy, yet their production process still needs clarification. Our research aimed to characterise the stages of operational chains applied in mould manufacture. The evidence comes from the Late Bronze and Early Iron Age lake settlement in Grzybiany in SW Poland, dated to 9/8th–5th century bce . The site provided rich data on tin‐bronze metallurgy, chiefly the lost‐wa…
Metallurgy in first-millennium BC Poland: Insights From Metal Production, Trade Networks and Landscape Archaeology
Multidisciplinary methods permit the first archaeometallurgical study of artefacts from five key first-millennium BC settlements in Poland: Grzybiany, Wicina, Kamieniec, Tarławki and Mołtajny. This project fills a lacuna in our understanding of technical ceramics, metal provenance and the role of settlements in the cultural landscape
Bone, antler, and tooth objects from the late bronze/early Iron Age urnfields in south-western Poland
Objects made of osseous materials are extremely rare in the urnfield burial contexts dated in SW Poland to the late Bronze and early Iron Age (ca. 1300–550 BCE). That may be the result of the cremation process which made the bone/antler artefacts fragmented and difficult to distinguish from human bones, usually densely packed in ceramic urns. We compare data about 95 specimens from four urnfields (Dunino [2], Jarząbkowice [1], Wicina [1], Sękowic…
Identifying the original function of vessels deposited in Lusatian Urnfield burials: The case of the Czernikowice cemetery (Poland)
Usage patterns are one of the leading research issues in archaeological pottery studies. Non-cinerary vessels deposited in burials of the Lusatian Urnfield are particularly intriguing since they did not typically undergo detailed functional analysis. Their function has usually been determined based on the shape and surface treatment. Thus, grave pottery is widely regarded to have been explicitly fashioned for mortuary practices and not used for o…
The Late Bronze Age 'metallurgists' graves’ in south-western Poland. Tracing the provenance of the metal raw material using casting moulds
A collection of objects associated with prehistoric metallurgy, including casting moulds, a casting core, and a fragment of a tuyere, were found in three metallurgists’ graves in the Late Bronze Age cemetery in Legnica, south-west Poland. The finds from these graves presented an opportunity for a scientific investigation of several aspects of Bronze Age metallurgy in this region by applying various analytical procedures to characterise the remain…
Towards better reconstruction of smelting temperatures: Methodological review and the case of historical K-rich Cu-slags from the Old Copper Basin, Poland
Temperature is a crucial factor influencing the effectiveness of metal smelting process. When studied in historical slags it provides information on the evolution of smelting technologies over time and how humankind approached metal recovery. Methodological approaches to temperature reconstruction using pyrometallurgical slags vary and this study serves as a critical review of the methods used so far with the complex historical smelting site used…
