Four Analyses of Nancy Pelosi as Speaker
Nancy Pelosi makes history. She was the first woman elected to a high-ranking position in the US House of Representatives when she became the Democratic Whip in 2001. She made more history as the first female Democratic Leader in 2003, and first woman elected as Speaker of the House in 2007. She made history by remaining the Democratic Leader even after losing the House majority. Pelosi made history yet again when she was again elected Speaker in…

Integrating Civic Engagement Into Scholarly Reward Systems
According to the American Democracy Project (2021), the definition of “civic engagement” is “working together to make a difference in the civic life of our communities.” This includes nonpolitical activities (e.g., volunteerism) and political engagement (e.g., voting and activism). This essay describes and analyzes how Winthrop University developed a campus-wide protocol for hosting visits by public officials and candidates. It also provides best practices that campuse…

Edy seeks to answer a difficult question: How do Americans construct a “collective” memory—as opposed to individual memories—of past events through the news media? The Constitution and the War Power: What Motivates Congressional Behavior
This paper examines whether constitutional interpretations of the proper roles of the executive and the legislative branches influence Congress members’ voting decisions on use of force votes. Specifically, the authors examine the hypothesis that some members are presidentialists—those whose constitutional interpretations favor the executive—and others are congressionalists—those whose constitutional interpretations defend congressional prerogati…
Electoral Structures, Venue Selection, and the (New?) Politics of School Desegregation
Are school desegregation proponents more likely to succeed in local political arenas in the South than in federal courtrooms? To raise that question on the fiftieth anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education may seem absurd. Had local politics in the South been receptive to desegregation efforts, there would presumably have been scant need for the litigation leading to that landmark case. However, the legal environment, national political climate…
