  • Human Sex Differences in Sexual Psychology and Behavior

    Paul Okami, T K Shackelford•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Sex Research•2001•Cited by: 21•References: 36

Because age and sex constitute the only distinct anatomical and physiological morphs (types) of the human species, universal sex differences ought to be expected. According to Darwinian theory, the most numerous sex differences are likely to be found in the domains of sexuality and reproduction. We first briefly review the basic model of the adaptationist program of modern Darwinian psychology. We then present evidence suggesting substantial sex …

  • Early Childhood Exposure to Parental Nudity and Scenes of Parental Sexuality (“Primal Scenes”)

  • Sexual experiences in early childhood

Paul Okami, Richard Olmstead et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•1997•Cited by: 8•References: 5

We present results of the first longitudinal study of long‐term outcome correlates of sexual experiences in early childhood (“sex play”). Two hundred children participated in the UCLA Family Lifestyles Project (FLS), beginning at birth to the current wave of data collection at ages 17–18. For most of the current analyses, data were complete for 96 of the young men and 88 of the young women. Participants were assessed on a wide range of adjustment…

  • Childhood exposure to parental nudity, parent‐child co‐sleeping, and “primal scenes”

Paul Okami•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•1995

In this article I compare clinical opinion with empirical evidence of psychological harm associated with childhood exposure to parental nudity, parent‐child co‐sleeping, and scenes of parental sexuality (“primal scenes”). Exceedingly scant empirical data could be located. Only in the case of parent‐child co‐sleeping is there any suggestion in the empirical literature of associated harm, and this harm—sleep disturbance—may be an antecedent rather …

  • Theorizing Sexuality

Paul Okami, Laura C Pendleton et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•1994•Cited by: 1

  • Personality correlates of pedophilia

Paul Okami, Amy Goldberg•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•1992•Cited by: 6•References: 12

This article critically reviews the literature related to personality correlates of pedophilia. It is noted that the "slippage" of legal and moral constructs into operational criteria and research methodology in this field have created impediments to sound professional consensus and the accumulation of a coherent data base. When the construct "pedophile" was separated from the construct "sex offender against a minor," there were no reliable findi…

  • Child perpetrators of sexual abuse”

    Paul Okami•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sex Research•1992•Cited by: 7•References: 9

This article critically examines the emergence in the professional literature of a new category of criminal deviant: the very young juvenile “sexual offender” (“child perpetrator”). It is argued that current research and writings on “child perpetrators” 1) fail to adhere to established tenets of scientific inquiry; 2) attempt to pathologize species‐typical behaviors; and 3) reflect symbolic opposition to widespread sexual license perceived to hav…

  • Intolerable Grievances Patiently Endured

    Paul Okami•ARTICLE•Political Psychology•1992•Cited by: 5•References: 11

Competing theories of anti-Jewish sentiment among African-Americans are reviewed and evaluated. Survey data are cited to support the hypothesis that two strains of black antisemitism exist: old-fashioned antisemitism, which closely resembles traditional American antisemitism, and referent antisemitism, a more recent development characteristic of anti-Jewish sentiment among the educated African-American middle-class. It is proposed that old-fashio…
