The Gnostic in Us All: Thinking from the Macrobiotics of Michio Kushi
Around 1970 in graduate school, I wrote a paper on the Gospel of Thomas , one of the documents discovered at Nag Hammadi in 1945. The debate over its gnosticizing elements was alive and well, and I weighed in with an argument that its thorough oblivion to history rendered it Gnostic—in the capital-“G” sense. I published a revised version of the paper in an academic journal in 1976. Then in 1986, I began to practice macrobiotics. As I studied the …
A Republic of Mind and Spirit: A Cultural History of American Metaphysical Religion
This path-breaking book tells the story of American metaphysical religion more fully than it has ever been told before, along the way significantly revising the panorama of American religious history. Catherine L. Albanese follows metaphysical traditions from Renaissance Europe to England and then America, where they have flourished from colonial days to the twenty-first century, blending often with African, Native American, and other cultural el…
A Luminous Brotherhood: Afro-Creole Spiritualism in Nineteenth-Century New Orleans
When Emma Hardinge published her 565-page history of nineteenth-century American spiritualism in 1869, only about ten pages dealt with New Orleans, with one reference to “noble creoles” and another to “excellent mediums” among the “colored population,” especially “a French creole named Dr. Valmour” (Modern American Spiritualism, pp. 428, 425). “Creole” signified a person of French or Spanish background, whether mixed-race, as J. B. Valmour, or wh…
Horace Bushnell among the Metaphysicians
On December 15, 1851, Andrew Jackson Davis-self-styled Harmonial philosopher and noted scion of the spiritualist world-sent a public letter. Addressed through theHartford Timesto the controversial Congregationalist minister Horace Bushnell, the message concerned the first of a series of lectures Bushnell was delivering at his North Church. Republic of Mind and Spirit: A Cultural History of American Metaphysical Religion
Introduction: Awash in a Sea of Metaphysics
This title owes not a little to Jon Butler, whose landmark 1990 book Awash in a Sea of Faith, perhaps not intentionally, paved the way for the exploration of metaphysical religion in the essays that follow. In a work subtitled Christianizing the American People, Butler triangulated the religious forces at work in early America, pointing to mainline denominational Christianity, evangelicalism, and the third force, here called metaphysics. Chronicl…

The Aura of Wellness: Subtle-Energy Healing and New Age Religion
Producing a book as a tenured professor retired from the Department of Physiological Science at the University of California, Los Angeles, is probably not an activity to invite unusual notice. But if the book is titled Infinite Mind: Science of the Human Vibrations of Consciousness and if one of its chapters announces as its topic “The Human Aura: Living Vibrations Brought to Light,” perhaps there is reason to take a second look. “Too often we sc…

Fisher Kings and Public Places: The Old New Age in the 1990s
The New Age is best seen as a new spirituality with pervasive ties to a large general American culture rather than as a narrowly defined movement with mostly theosophical roots. In fact, the New Age is an expression of American nature religion, intimately tied to a nineteenth-century past that blurred distinctions between spirit and matter. This nature religion carries considerable moral weight and, especially with its emphasis on healing as reco…

Religion and the American Experience: A Century After
Philip Schaff'sAmerica, newly translated from the German, appeared on these shores 133 years ago. Although that fact belies the title (and pushes the beginning of the American Society of Church History a third of a century into the future), I suspect that in 1888 Schaff would have concurred with much that he had thought as a younger scholar. He claimed, though, that he would not live in California "for any price," and I have speculated about whet…
Physic and Metaphysic in Nineteenth-Century America: Medical Sectarians and Religious Healing
Writing in the first issue of The Magnetic and Cold Water Guide in 1846, an unnamed editor hailed the virtues of the cold-water cure: "Instead of the dosing and drugging of the old system of practice, it proposes to rely on the indwelling healing power of nature alone, to provoke and regulate which, it employs the widespread element of fresh unadulterated water." In case readers had not caught the full dimensions of the message, the writer insert…

The Kinetic Revolution: Transformation in the Language of the Transcendentalists
THIS essay deals with six American Transcendentalists in a way in which they were fond of dealing with life: correspondence. The ancient theory of correspondence antedated its nineteenth-century adherents by long centuries. Chinese sages voiced it in their concepts of the Tao and the Confucian social order which replicated a heavenly model. Indians based the caste system and its Dharma on their perceptions of the structure of the macrocosm. In th…

from an American Farmer, he spoke for one kind of American popular awareness during the period. We are people of cultivators, declared Crevecoeur. Here men were no better than carnivorous animals of superior rank, living on the flesh of wild animals when they can catch them. Their new manners produced, Crevecoeur argued, a strange sort of lawl…
