“The Call is [Also] Coming From Inside the House”
The purpose of this study was to explore the role of abortion narratives in predicting reproductive justice (RJ) collective action intentions, as well as to understand the psychological mechanisms that may explain this link. In doing so, we integrated a reproductive justice framework and sought to extend the social identity model of collective action to reproductive justice advocacy. Predominantly white, heterosexual participants were randomly as…
With Liberty and Justice for a Few
This essay does not necessarily contradict Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Rev. Theodore Parker on whether the arc of the moral universe bends at all, much less which way. But growing and glaring injustices require ethicists to interrogate the powerful, aspirational phrase. For instance, children learn the Pledge of Allegiance early: “with liberty and justice for all.” They expect that everyone will be treated fairly in a democracy. Depending on t…

Rosemary Radford Ruether
Rosemary Radford Ruether’s scholarly accomplishments and human achievements are rivaled by few and achieved by virtually no other theologian in recent memory. Hildegard of Bingen might be a competitor in all of her eleventh-century complexity. But for postmodernity, Rosemary is a singular, highly regarded, and beloved figure
Transforming Feminist Racist Structures
Transforming Feminist Racist Structures Mary E. Hunt (bio) Judith Plaskow’s characteristically candid, courageous, self-critical, and honest assessment of the Journal of Feminist Studies in Religion (JFSR) continues an important conversation that will endure long beyond current participants. As a white, Christian, cis, lesbian US citizen, I embody many of the problematic dynamics at hand. I am increasingly aware of the hegemonic forms of oppressi…
Examining the Effect of a Randomized Media Intervention on Knowledge and Support of Abortion Restrictions
Models of Sexual Consent Communication by Film Rating
Explicit Verbal Sexual Consent Communication
Objectives: College students believe that they are supposed to be explicit and verbal in their sexual consent communication. We examined various contexts to determine when sexual consent is likely to be communicated explicitly and verbally. Method: We surveyed U.S. college students’ (n = 707) sexual consent communication. Results: We identified contexts when explicit verbal consent cues are less likely—when the person is a woman, when the sexual …
A Content Analysis of Sexual Consent and Refusal Communication in Mainstream Films
Young adults have limited access to comprehensive sex education. As such, they may seek sexuality information through such alternative sources, such as mass media. Previous research suggests that media, including films and television shows, can influence sexual behaviors and attitudes. Because sexual consent communication is important to sexual experiences, the purpose of this study was to assess how sexual consent and refusal communication were …

Sexual Consent In and Out of the Bedroom
Previous research assumes that people communicate consent “in the bedroom” or other private settings and immediately prior to sexual activity. The research presented in this study challenges that notion, examining consent as it was interpreted by 30 heterosexual college students during in-depth interviews. Our findings suggest that men often read consent as happening in social settings, whereas women are more likely to conceptualize such cues as …
Beyond Down and Dirty
The AAR-SBL Women’s Caucus session on ‘Beyond Down and Dirty: From Good to Great Sex’ revisited the Good Sex: Feminist Perspectives from the World’s Religions project and book with the participation of two of its co-editors, Mary E. Hunt and Patricia Beattie Jung, and co-author and collaborator, Wanda Defeilt. Scholar colleagues, Brandy Daniels, Fitri Junoes, and Alicia Besa Panganiban, presented intriguing papers on feminist religious and ethica…
College Students' Sexual Consent Communication And Perceptions of Sexual Double Standards
College students' consent communication may be influenced by gender norms that challenge assumptions of affirmative consent standards. Cultural shifts in students' views of sexuality may be necessary for affirmative consent policies to be effective
Catholic Gender Denial
This lively set of essays makes a relatively simple but very important collective point that has widespread theo-political implications. The focus is on the Vatican's hair-on-fire approach to 'gender ideology' or 'gender theory', specifically, the generalized denial at the institutional level of obvious advances in the field. The results range from innocuous to deadly as church officials seek to stem the tide of a changing anthropology upon which…

The Safe Country of Origin Concept in European Asylum Law
This article investigates the evolution of the safe country of origin concept within the European legal framework and asks whether any country can ever be considered truly ‘safe’ in the context of refugee protection. Safe country of origin practices enable European countries to make generalised assumptions of safety and to reject asylum applications as ‘unfounded’ without complete or individualised examination procedures. This research looks at t…
Pure Complexity
Mary Daly had a complicated relationship to the Catholic tradition. While it is commonly assumed that she rejected it thoroughly, this article offers a more nuanced look at the various ways in which it shaped her thinking. What is clear is that she had a decisive impact on the Catholic tradition, indeed on religion in general. Language about the divine, images of deities, human participation in things spiritual will never be the same after her th…

Response II to Rosemary Radford Ruether
Mary E. Hunt agrees with Rosemary Radford Ruether’s conclusion that women-church and women priests ‘both have their place in a vision of renewed church and renewed priestly ministry.’ She observes that the ‘either/or’ frame plays into what many feminists have tried to avoid with integrity, namely, setting progressive Catholic women against one another in the public arena. The writer explores the evolving relationship between and among the various…
Good Sex” and Religion
This article presents an overview of both the processes and the results of an international, interdisciplinary, and interreligious feminist study of "good sex" that resulted in a volume by the same name. We argue that religion (including its secular equivalent, i.e., global capitalism) remains a powerfully influential cultural force that shapes people's lives, in general, and sanctifies their beliefs, in particular, about what makes for good sex.…

Indecent, Important and in Focus
Marcella Althaus-Reid's Indecent Theology: Theological Perversions in Sex, Gender and Politics brings a liberationist view to postmodern analysis, a queer eye to Christianity, and a theologian's critique to culture. It marks the beginning of what Hunt hopes will be sustained reflection by Latin American women on the relationship between sexuality and theo-politics

Psychological Implications of Women's Spiritual Health
The burgeoning women's spirituality movement is concrete evidence of feminist awakening in the culture. Women are finding some forms of feminist spirituality helpful for good mental health. Three specific shifts which have been occasioned by the feministization of religion are: (1) Women as protagonists of religion; (2) Women role models in the ministry, the academic study of religion, and as healers and leaders; and (3) Feminist changes in the c…

Good Sex
Good sexis not something most people associate with religion. A group of feminist religious scholars seeks to change that by replacingpatriarchal, sex-negative teachings with feminist, sex-positive ones. The project is entitled ‘Good Sex: Women's Religious Wisdom on Sexuality’. Our goal is to unearth and emphasise women-friendly, root teachings in the world's major religions with an eye towards the transformation of public policy. This project is…
A Shared Garden (II)
Religious feminists in Latin America and North America are engaged in an ongoing project entitled ‘A Shared Garden: Beyond Violence—Solidarity and Ecofeminism’. Judy Ress’s and Ivone Gebara’s articles in Ecotheology 4 (1997) provided a useful introduction to and overview of the project. I continue the conversation on the challenges of working cross-culturally to convey another dimension of our common endeavor. Of course colleagues would articulat…
