  • Cosmogonic Conceptions of the Udmurt People in Naming Stars and Their Images in Folklore

    Tatiana Vladykina•ARTICLE•Incantatio An International…•2024

The cosmogonic concepts of the Udmurt people can be detected through the names of stars, the names of which are usually based on mythological cognition. Additional and very significant information about space objects is contained in folklore texts. The images of stars are included in a stable triad of heavenly bodies along with the sun and moon. Their constant feature is ‘bright’ light, opposed to images of negative energy, forces of darkness – d…

  • How do Udmurts address their God(s)

Paris France INALCO, E Toulouze et al.•ARTICLE•Incantatio An International…•2023

This article relies on a long-term fieldwork experience: Eva Toulouze has attended Udmurt animistic ceremonies in Bashkortostan over a period of ten years and has collected there the uttered prayers. These prayers are the corpus upon which our linguistic reflections are articulated. The language of the prayers represents a particular register of the Udmurt language. They are deeply dialectal, and while today they are mostly transmitted through wr…

    Open Access•Tatiana Vladykina, Aleksi Moine•ARTICLE•Études finno-ougriennes•2021

  • Food Symbolism in Udmurt Folklore

  • Rites Associated with Conjuring Rain in the Udmurt Calendar Cycle

Open Access•Tatiana Vladykina, Galina Glukhova•ARTICLE•Folklore Electronic Journal of…•2011

Several archaic features of interpreting the surrounding world are still present in Udmurt folk culture. Calendar-related customs and feasts still preserve the oldest elements on all levels of rituals: in activities, artefacts, verbal and acoustic fields, etc. The dismissal of pests and caterpillars, and their wedding rituals, are deeply rooted in calendar customs. The thorough study of the codes of these rituals would help to determine the seman…
