Forms of unsiting in factory compositions by Leslie Kaplan and Joseph Ponthus
Leslie Kaplan's "Excess - The Factory" (1982, translated in 2018 by Julie Carr and Jennifer Pap) and Joseph Ponthus's "On the Line: Notes from a Factory" (2019, translated in 2021 by Stephanie Smee) are rare poetic depictions of industrial environments. Kaplan dwells on the manufacturing setting as exemplifying overproduction, whereas Ponthus attends to how precarious work in globalized supply chains gives rise to localized pressures. The two fro…
A Transprovincial Movement? Provincializing Frenchness in the Nineteenth Century via the Académie Provinciale of Lyon
This article sheds light on two key “transprovincial” moments in the history of the Lyon-based Académie Provinciale (1826), a sort of contre-académie and local alternative to the Paris-based Académie française: 1) the admission of Breton poet Élisa Mercœur (1809–1835) as a “membre correspondant” and 2) the publication of the Préludes poétiques by Franc-Comtois Aimé de Loy (1798–1834) as the first volume in the “Bibliothèque de l’Académie Provinci…

Planetary gardening via female-led anthologies of women's poetry in French
This article showcases the fruitfulness of cross-fertilizing geographical and literary methods to address the complexities of women's poems being compiled into an anthology - a process of negotiation compounded by male domination of the canon. Inspired by Gilles Clément's reflections on the 'planetary garden', we radically posit female-edited poetry anthologies as a prism for rethinking ecosystem management. Focussing on three landmark collection…
Reclaiming provincialism
This article argues against the lingering pejorative usage of the term ‘provincialism’ in public discourse in particular. It engages with transnational debates emerging from Australia and French-speaking settings, where provincialism often denotes backwardness, isolation, and a lack of high culture. Through explorations of (a) the universalizing value of the provincial and (b) the diversifying concept of ‘provincializing’, the article advocates f…
Between Representation and Imagination: The Promotion of Dijon in Gaspard de la Nuit
Louis (Aloysius) Bertrand’s Gaspard de la Nuit: Fantaisies à la manière de Rembrandt et de Callot, a collection of fantaisies in prose published posthumously in 1842, opens with an enigmatic first preface. In what Gérard Genette called a ‘préface auctoriale dénégative’ — an established literary cliché where the author assumes the role of publisher — Louis Bertrand encounters the mysterious fictive author of the Fantaisies à la manière de Rembrand…
Le Provincial of Dijon: French Romanticism and Provincial Cultural Awakening
