Attachment Theory and Concepts of God: Parent Referencing Versus Self-Referencing
We replicated and extended Buri and Mueller's study, which tested whether one's God concept is primarily self- or parent-referenced. Following their findings, we predicted that God concepts would primarily be self-referenced. However, we also predicted, in line with attachment theory, that God concepts would be influenced to some degree by attachment to mother. We found our predicted result in a sample of university students ( N = 223). However, …

The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test: An Update of Research Findings
Background: The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) has been extensively researched to determine its capability to accurately and practically screen for alcohol problems. Methods: During the 5 years since our previous review of the literature, a large number of additional studies have been published on the AUDIT, abbreviated versions of it, its psychometric properties, and the applicability of the AUDIT for a diverse array of popula…
The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (Audit): A Review of Recent Research
Background: Efficient, inexpensive screening for early stage alcohol problems is important in health care settings. The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) has been studied extensively to establish its value in this regard. Methods: A literature search that used EtOH as a database was conducted to identify studies published on the AUDIT through September 2001. Keywords used for the search were “Alcohol Use Disorders Identification T…
Spiritual Experience, Religious Orientation, and Self-Reported Behavior
This study found evidence to support the validity of the revised Spiritual Experience Index (Genia, 1997) as an instrument to gauge spiritual experience within a developmental framework. The Spiritual Experience Index's Spiritual Support subscale is related to engaging in formal religious practices, having God consciousness, and having an intrinsic orientation to religion. The Spiritual Openness subscale is related to, but also distinct from, que…

Hood's Mysticism Scale Revisited: A Factor-Analytic Replication
Caird's (1988) factor-analytic study of Hood's (1975) M-scale was replicated using adult subjects (N = 87) rather than college students. Subjects included contemplative mystics, psychotics with religious preoccupations, and other adults. As in Caird's (1988) findings, our study found two factors similar to Hood's two-component solution, reflecting Unitary and Interpretive categories of mystical experience. A three-factor solution splits the Inter…
