The National War College, which was established by the Joint Chiefs of Staff in 1946, is one of many innovations relating to the administration of foreign affairs designed to meet this situation. Open Access•John W Masland•ARTICLE•American Political Science Review•1942

Among the many problems which the war has thrust upon the United States has been that of the proper treatment of the conscientious objector to compulsory military service. Our record in this regard during the first World War was not one of which a democratic nation could be proud. With the enactment of the Selective Service and Training Act of 1940, reconsideration of the issue was necessary. Now, after almost two years of experience with the adm…

  • American Attitudes Toward Japan

    Open Access•John W Masland•ARTICLE•The Annals of the American…•1941

AMERICAN attitudes toward Japan may be understood by considering opinion on two distinct but related topics. These are, first, opinion about Japan itself; and second, opinion on the policy which the American Government should follow in its relations with Japan. In discussing each of these topics, attention should be given not only to the prevailing attitudes at a given time, but also to the attitudes of particular elements of the public; for it m…

    John W Masland•ARTICLE•Public Opinion Quarterly•1940

After surveying the composition and objectives of the organized peace movement in the United States, the author concludes that if America must again decide whether to join Great Britain in war against Germany, “the internationalists in the American peace movement will not want to keep us out of war and the isolationists will be unable to do so.” The author is Instructor in Political Science at Stanford University
