The Black Sports Reportage of Black Sports Magazine, 1971–1978
This article explores and contextualizes the short-lived magazine Black Sports (1971-1978) as an example of what the radical sports activist Harry Edwards called Black sports reporting. It identifies three interrelated themes that typified the magazine’s Black sports reportage and the sociopolitical and commercial goals that drove it. First, and most generally, Black Sports critiqued the white-controlled sports establishment and exposed its vario…
Pukey Jocks
This essay uses BBS Productions’ Drive, He Said (1971) to consider how New Hollywood cinema and a cluster of campus revolt films contributed to activist critiques of American sport during the Vietnam era. Drive, He Said conceptualized a “pukey jock,” an athlete who was ambivalent about sport's stereotypical embodiment of establishmentarian values. In doing so, it created a template for the emergence of a new kind of politicized athlete that emerg…

The Reeducation of Bill Walton
Scholarship and popular commentary on the basketball player Bill Walton tend to focus on his remarkable tenure at UCLA, his countercultural lifestyle, his role as a ‘Great White Hope’ while basketball was becoming increasingly Black, and the unrelenting string of injuries that cut short his professional career. A lesser-known aspect of Walton’s story is his dramatic transformation from a ‘revolutionary’ who once partnered with the notorious sport…
Hoop Dreams at 30
Steve James, Peter Gilbert, and Frederick Marx's documentary Hoop Dreams was released in 1994 to nearly universal acclaim. Shot over seven-and-a-half years and edited down to 171 minutes from over 250 hours of footage, the documentary chronicles the lives of Arthur Agee and William Gates, two young African American boys from inner-city Chicago who dream of becoming professional basketball players. The film offers a heart-rending portrait of their…

LeRoy Neiman and the Art of Network Sports Television
Famous for his vibrant and splashy paintings of the sporting life and illustrations for Playboy magazine, LeRoy Neiman (1921–2012) at one time stood among the United States’ most popular and wealthiest artists. He was also—in large part because of his visibility, fortune, and engagement with mass cultural subject matter—almost universally dismissed by critics and curators. Neiman’s regular appearances on the stereotypically lowbrow medium of tele…
The 12th Man
The study of sound is largely absent from scholarship on sport in general and sport fandom in particular. Sound, however, plays a crucial role in the cultivation, maintenance, and performance of sports fandom. Using Seattle’s 12th Man and the discourses surrounding it, this essay examines the relationship between sound, space, and fandom in the contemporary National Football League. We consider how fans’ sonic labor is constitutive of their place…
Monday Night Football and the Racial Roots of the Network TV Event
Launched in 1970, American Broadcasting Company’s (ABC) Monday Night Football made live prime time sports television viable when most sports broadcasts were relegated to weekends. It did so in part by packaging games for a crossover viewership. To this end, it suppressed racial divisiveness that might splinter the mainstream audience it sought. ABC parlayed Monday Night Football’s widespread popularity into prime time TV events beyond sports broa…

Institutionalizing and Industrializing Sport History in the Contemporary Sports Television Documentary
Documentaries compose a key way that ESPN has cultivated its self-named status as “The Worldwide Leader in Sports.” SportsCentury (1999), a multimedia project for which ESPN commissioned a forty-eight-member expert panel to rank the twentieth-century’s top 100 North American athletes was the media outlet’s first major foray into the genre. This essay outlines how SportsCentury aided ESPN’s efforts to build its brand identity; enhance and diversif…
The Sporting Paratext, Reception, and the Male Domain in CBS’s “One Shining Moment”
Since 1987 CBS has ended its television coverage of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament with “One Shining Moment,” a sentimental highlight package that reflects on and celebrates the event. In 2010, CBS commissioned the popular vocalist Jennifer Hudson to sing “One Shining Moment’s” featured song, which had previously only been performed by men—most notably the R&B crooner Luther Vandross. Hudson’s performance elicited a flood of derision from c…

Irrational Power
Though prizefighting films provoked contention in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century America, they were legal and exhibited in places where the sport itself was prohibited. The insertion of Jack Johnson’s black body into the previously white-dominated context of prizefighting films increased significantly the controversy these texts elicited. Discourses surrounding fight films cast Johnson as an exceptionally excessive signifier who so …
