The importance of lead in the silver production at Riotinto (Spain)
The site of Corta Lago is located within Rio Tinto mining district, in the Huelva province, in the South-West of Spain. This region is geologically characterised by the presence of the Iberian Pyrite Belt, highly important for the concentration and the subsequent exploitation and production of several metals such as silver, copper, gold and manganese, since the Bronze Age up to few decades ago. This paper focuses on the exploitation of the North …
Early Evidence for Steelmaking in the Judaic Sources
The discovery of steelmaking can be considered one of the important leaps in the evolution of homo faber . Once iron smelting techniques were widely used, iron became the most common metal available. Although iron corrodes easily and is rather soft, with relatively simple skills and materials Its surface can be "steeled" (carbon enriched) to produce a hard metal "case." The production of homogeneous steel by a more complicated technique was achie…
Archaeo-Metallurgical Researches in the Southern Arabah 1959–1990. Part 2

Was Copper Smelted in Ancient Temples ? - more about crucible smelting
Copper-rich lumps of smelting slag had been sent from the smelting sites to the Temple and was melted in small crucibles to provide copper for the casting of votive figurines. The presence of smelting slag in crucibles does not provide evidence for primary copper smelting in crucibles
The Beginnings and the Development of Early Metallurgy and the Settlement and Chronology of the Western Arabah, from the Chalcolithic Period to Early Bronze Age IV
In the Arabah and Sinaz, habitations, burials and metallurgical workshops dated between the Chalcolithic and EB IV strongly indicate the existence of an autochthonous, pastoral population with its own cultural developments and chronology. The current view that most of the early sites of Sinai and the southern Negeb were Aradian-Canaanite EB II settlements is erroneous. The intrusive Aradian EB II sites were trading stations not directly connected…
