Interior Aquapelagos
The authors of this article were involved in the conceptualisation and organisation of the first international conference on Inland Waterscapes, subtitled 'Nature, Society and Culture in Hydrography,' held at the University of Udine between 22nd-25th May 2024. The following essay draws on an extended dialogue between us prior to, during and after the conference about how to comprehend and characterise the relationship between water, landscape and…
Geographies of inland waterscapes
Humans and water have a complex relationship that includes various dimensions such as sociocultural, political, legal and ecological. Considering the ubiquity of water, we need a more holistic perspective to help us see water not as a static entity but rather as one in constant movement, physically and conceptually; acknowledging the interplay between water and humans is essential to understanding societal narratives deeply embedded in places. In…
River contracts in north-east Italy
River contracts (RCs) are voluntary agreements between stakeholders for managing water bodies and involve participatory, evidence-based action plans. Increasingly, European authorities recognise that effective water policies require bottom-up, inclusive decision-making. Despite widely held assumptions about the benefits of including stakeholders in river basin management and encouraging participatory mechanisms of decision-making, the growing rhe…
Absence as an affordance
This article extends our understanding of inland waterways by theorising the temporary absences of water in canals and rivers as possibilities for action, that is, affordances. The interplay of temporary absence and presence of water in the inland waterways provides a range of potentialities for various activities and practices. Affordance theory can help us to further theorise material absences and position them as important elements of performi…
Heart of Wetness
The natural and human ensemble of Venice and its lagoon, with its peculiar island features, is among one of the most studied urban and environmental systems in the world. This introduction to Shima's special issue on Venice and its lagoon provides a brief historical and environmental context to this space and a possible platform whereby the local complexity and liminality of wetlands, lagoons and islands gesture to and evoke global themes, concep…
An Island for Everyone
This article focuses on the story of the proposed privatisation of Poveglia, a small uninhabited island in the Venetian Lagoon. In March 2014 the Italian State Property Office announced that a 99-year lease on Poveglia would be offered for sale in an online auction. The reaction of some citizens led to the formation of the association Poveglia per Tutti (Poveglia for Everyone), whose activists and supporters wanted the island to be preserved as a…
The World's Most Haunted Island
Located in the Venetian Lagoon, the uninhabited island of Poveglia has recently gained global renown as ‘the world’s most haunted island’. This article reconstructs how this ghost island narrative originated and began to circulate and analyses the social, cultural and geographical preconditions that fostered it. It also considers how such a narrative rebounded on the island, attracting believers in the paranormal and tourists interested in ghosts…
Performing the literary map
This article retreads our geographic and literary performance in March 2015, following, almost 30 years later, the traces of Gianni Celati’s travel diaries Verso la foce (‘Towards the River Mouth’) through the Po River Delta, in Northeastern Italy. In our reading of Celati’s text and during our 2-days performance, we decided to ‘go along’ the Po River, considered as a ‘liquid chronotope’ that discloses and shapes a geographic and narrative ‘liqui…
Modernist Ideas and Local Reception
Utopianism, paternalism and the myth of progress were the ideological foundations underpinning company towns. These communities, which sprang up towards the end of the nineteenth century, were dependent on a single company for all or most of the functions and services necessary for town life. This article explores aspects of company town life as variously implemented and received depending on cultural and geographical contexts. In particular, thi…
