  • Saving Faith: Making Religious Pluralism an American Value at the Dawn of the Secular Age

    Bret E Carroll•ARTICLE•Journal of American History•2016•Cited by: 1

When did religious pluralism become an American value? The nation's historical grounding in both First Amendment religious freedom and practical Protestant dominance and exclusionism makes this a complicated question. Recent explorations of American religious pluralism by William Hutchison, Barbara McGraw, Chris Beneke, Kevin Schultz, and others have produced a lively debate. Saving Faith is the most recent contribution. David Mislin argues that …

The dynamic of American religious pluralism contains at its core a spatial politics configured by a longstanding pattern of Anglo-Protestant dominance coupled with a widespread though tension-filled acceptance of religious pluralism. This dynamic has been particularly dramatic and intense since the 1960s because of an increase in the numbers of adherents of non-Protestant and non-Western religions in the United States and an increase in the degre…

  • Exploring Other Worlds: Margaret Fox, Elisha Kent Kane, and the Antebellum Culture of Curiosity

    Bret E Carroll•ARTICLE•Journal of American History•2006

Since Neil Harris's Humbug appeared in 1973, scholars have explored in increasing depth the dynamics of a democratic antebellum popular culture and an emerging mass-entertainment industry driven, Harris argued, by an “operational aesthetic” grounded in appeals to public curiosity and individual judgment (Humbug, 1973, p. 57). Independent scholar David Chapin built on and extended that body of work by examining the antebellum “culture of curiosity…

    Open Access•Bret E Carroll•ARTICLE•Church History•2002•Cited by: 1•References: 21

The concept of region has been perhaps the most important in the historical study of religious geography in the United States. Its centrality is due at least in part to its having been proposed as an organizing principle at the inception of that field in its modern form by historian Edwin Scott Gaustad and geographer Wilbur Zelinsky about four decades ago. But the concept has been, and remains, highly problematic. This brief essay first explores …
