Social Dreaming
What is activated at that joint where time is at once toofast and tooslow? What is felt? Propositions for Social Dreaming, a quilt-based project by Andrew Goodman and Erin Manning, explores this active interval of time in the making by inquiring into the dreams that fissure it. Thoughts swirl from algorithmic potential to the disorder of beds of unmade. Living otherwise is the problematic that moves the thinking, living in modes neurodiverse, in …
OP21 Modelled Health Impacts of the London Cycle Hire Scheme
Background Bicycle sharing systems are being implemented in many cities worldwide, but have received little robust evaluation. We modelled the impacts of the London cycle hire scheme (LCH) upon the health of its users. Methods Data sources included total-population operational registration and usage data for LCH (April 2011-March 2012); surveys of LCH users (2011); and London data on travel, physical activity, road traffic collisions and PM2.5 ai…
OP45 Walking, Cycling and Driving to Work in the English and Welsh 2011 Census
Background Increasing walking and cycling, and reducing motorised vehicle use, are increasingly recognised as health and environmental priorities. This paper examines levels and trends in the use of different commute modes in England and Wales, both overall and with respect to small-area deprivation. It also examines how far commute modal share can serve as a proxy for travel behaviour more generally. Methods 25.1 million adult commuters reported…
PS01 Associations of Health, Physical Activity and Weight Status with Motorised Travel and Transport Carbon Dioxide Emissions
Background Motorised travel and associated carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions generate substantial health costs, many of which disproportionately affect socio-economically disadvantaged groups. These health costs may include contributing to rising obesity levels. Obesity has in turn been hypothesised to increase motorised travel and/or CO 2 emissions, both because heavier people may use motorised travel more and because heavier people may choose la…
P1-434 Birth outcomes and early-life social characteristics predict unequal educational outcomes across the lifecourse and across generations. Data from a swedish cohort born 1915–1929 and their grand…
Educational inequalities are a major contributor to health and social inequalities. We investigated the effects of adverse birth characteristics and social disadvantage upon educational outcomes over the lifecourse and across generations. Our subjects were 12 674 Swedish infants born 1915–1929 and 9706 of their grandchildren born 1973–1980. Within both cohorts, better school achievement (schoolmarks in elementary school) was predicted by: heavier…
How and why do people commute by car? A mixed-methods investigation
Background Reducing car use and promoting physically active travel would be expected to decrease air pollution, traffic crashes and diseases associated with sedentary lifestyles. Objective To investigate how and why people commute by car. Design Mixed-methods cross-sectional study, integrating qualitative data from in-depth interviews with quantitative data from questionnaires. Setting Cambridge, UK. Participants Commuters to Cambridge. 47 partic…
Day length and weather effects on children's physical activity and participation in play, sports and active travel
Policy context Proponents of the Daylight Saving Bill currently under consideration in the UK parliament have hypothesised that extending afternoon daylight would promote child physical activity. Objective To investigate the relative contribution of day length and weather to children's physical activity, and the behavioural mediators underlying these effects. Design Cross-sectional school-based study Setting Hertfordshire, UK Participants 325 chi…
Birth characteristics and early-life social characteristics predict unequal educational outcomes
Objective To investigate early-life biological and social predictors of educational outcomes, and compare the nature and magnitude of these effects across twentieth century Sweden. Design Multi-generational data from a representative, population-based birth cohort, with linkage to routinely collected data. Setting Sweden. Participants 9829 Swedish male and females born 1915–1929 and 9465 of their grandchildren born 1973-1980, restricting particip…
Social and biological determinants of reproductive success in Swedish males and females born 1915–1929
characteristics interact so that combinations of factors carry cumulative risk for CVD? (iii) are associations explained by early life predictors of CVD risk. Design: Birth cohort. Setting: England, Scotland and Wales. Participants: 7916 men and women in the 1958 British birth cohort who were in paid employment at 45 y. Main Outcome Measures: Body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), blood pressure (BP), triglycerides, total and high densi…
