The Culture of Credit in Eighteenth-Century Commerce: The English Textile Industry
In this article, I seek to expand the relatively narrow focus of most work on commercial credit in eighteenth-century England by incorporating culture into an economic analysis. This article examines the economic developments that induced producers to seek our innovations during a transformative period in the Yorkshire woollen industry. The analysis examines both the increase in the scale of the typical operation and the tremendous effect that fashion had on the industry. Particular attention is given to the ways in which the workings of real markets and product innovation focused entrepreneurial energy on the production…

The Origins of Middle-Class Culture: Halifax, Yorkshire, 1660-1780
In this book John Smail focuses on the economic and social life in one of the most important northern textile centers as he explores themes fundamental to the history of eighteenth-century England. By developing a cultural theory of class formation, he offers a solution to a question that has provoked spirited discussion in recent years: what were the origins of middle-class English culture? Smail argues that a group's class identity depends on a…

This paper is concerned with the daerah crisis in North Sumatra between December 1956 and October 1957.The period chosen, like all "periods," is arbitrary; I have adopted it because the events between Col. Simbolon's coup of December 22, 1956 and the complex doings which have the name of the October 19th Affair can be fashioned into a satisfying short story, and because these events can be used to illustrate all the important political forces at …
