Strangers from the middle of nowhere? Manaf Halbouni’s Monument and the politics of proximity
World Ordering from the Margins: An Introduction
This Special Forum is an invitation to reconsider the analytical toolbox with which world order has been analyzed in the past. In this introductory article, we propose to focus on processes of world ordering from the margins as a contribution to research on world-order conceptions beyond the Liberal International Order. We examine world-ordering practices by a variety of actors, across the Global North and the Global South, including activists, p…
A World of Many Walks? Zapatista World Ordering between Center and Margins
At the current moment of multiple global crises, including of the International Liberal Order, a search for new practices of world ordering seems to coexist with a deep skepticism regarding the possibilities of global solidarity and common struggles between centers and margins. Against this background, this paper focuses on the world ordering practices of the Mexican Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional, a group that occupies a position betw…
It Just Feels Right. Visuality and Emotion Norms in Right-Wing Populist Storytelling
This paper contributes to debates on the growing appeal of right-wing populism by combining a focus on visuality, narratives, and emotions. We argue that right-wing populists' claims extend to establishing alternative emotion norms that collectivize feelings and their expression, and are conveyed in visual narratives. The emotional range covered by these norms transcends emotions usually associated with right-wing populism such as fear or humilia…
The material politics of damming water: An introduction
First paragraph: Hydroelectric power is on the rise. Both developed and emerging economies establish hydroelectric dams in order to make use of natural water resources, contribute to electrification, and supply energy to national industries. For their advocates, dams are a silver bullet combining three pillars of sustainable development that are often perceived as being in mutual conflict, namely, economic growth, social welfare, and ecological s…
Social mobilization against large hydroelectric dams: A comparison of Ethiopia, Brazil, and Panama
Large-scale hydroelectric dams have-throughout their history-had adverse impacts on local population groups, natural resources, and entire eco-systems furthering resistance and protest against them. In this paper, we aim to investigate the impact of social mobilization against large-scale dams by considering political opportunity structures, actor constellations, and frames. We comparatively analyze three case studies in varying political systems…
Refugees welcome: Arrival gifts, reciprocity, and the integration of forced migrants
Against competing political theories of the integration of immigrants, we propose to reframe the relationship between the populations of host countries and arriving refugees in terms of a neo-Maussian theory of gift exchange. Using the example of the European refugee crisis of 2015 and the welcoming attitude of significant parts of German civil society, we argue that this particular situation should be understood as epitomizing the trend toward i…
Gift-giving and reciprocity in global society: Introducing Marcel Mauss in international studies
How do multiple obligations to give, to receive, and to reciprocate contribute to the evolution of international society? This question can be derived from the works of the French anthropologist and sociologist Marcel Mauss, in particular from his classic essay The Gift, published in 1925. The aim of this article is to introduce Mauss' theory of the gift to international political theorists, to develop a general theoretical argument from his clai…
