Despite calls for antiracism, research on potential links between parental socialization and anti-Black bias and behavior in young White children remains limited. Open Access•Corinne Archibald, Emily J Takamasa et al.•ARTICLE•Youth & Society•2025•References: 51

BIPOC adolescent mental health is essential to a healthy, equitable society. Negative associations between discrimination and mental health may be ameliorated by affirmed ethnic-racial identity (ERI). We examined relations between racial discrimination and depression, anxiety, suicide ideation, chronic pain and subjective happiness moderated by ERI affirmation (353 U.S. BIPOC youth, Mage = 15.28, 48% female). Racial discrimination negatively, and…

  • Parents’ differential trait, mental state, and coping talk about White and Black child storybook characters

    Open Access•Angus M Fraser, Peter J Reschke et al.•ARTICLE•Social Development•2024•References: 23

Limited literature has examined parents’ unsolicited trait, mental state, and coping talk about media characters by race as they co‐view with their children. We observed 195 US parents describing an illustrated depiction of racialized social exclusion for their child (53% male; M age = 5.46 years; 60% White) in their home setting. Families discussed a Black child being excluded by White children or a White child being excluded by Black children. …

    Open Access•Emily J Takamasa, Angus M Fraser et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research on Adolescence•2024•References: 24

Research suggests that BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) adolescents have the best developmental outcomes when strong, positive ethnic-racial identity (ERI) is acknowledged and embraced. This study investigated whether discrimination, internalizing symptomology, parent socialization, and/or interactions of these variables were associated with adolescent ERI, specifically in exploration, resolution, and affirmation, to illuminate nuanced …
