Relaxing Credit and Information Constraints
Low fertilizer use by smallholder farmers continues to limit crop yields in sub-Saharan Africa. We study the longer-term outcomes of a field experiment conducted between 2014 and 2016, which found that plot-specific fertilizer recommendations combined with a subsidy increased fertilizer use and maize yields. We return in 2019 and find that effects dissipate after the subsidy is discontinued. Our follow-up results suggest that credit constraints s…
Mitigating sustainability tradeoffs as global fruit and vegetable systems expand to meet dietary recommendations
Recent analyses indicate that global fruit and vegetable (F&V) production will need to increase by 50%–150% by 2050 in order to achieve sustainable and healthy diets for 10 billion people. Although global production of F&V has grown by 50% during the last two decades alone, simply scaling up current systems of F&V production, supply chains, and consumption will inevitably worsen environmental and socioeconomic tradeoffs. This article examines thr…

Optimizing resource use efficiencies in the food–energy–water nexus for sustainable agriculture
Nutrients in the nexus
Synthetic nitrogen (N) fertilizer has enabled modern agriculture to greatly improve human nutrition during the twentieth century, but it has also created unintended human health and environmental pollution challenges for the twenty-first century. Averaged globally, about half of the fertilizer-N applied to farms is removed with the crops, while the other half remains in the soil or is lost from farmers’ fields, resulting in water and air pollutio…
