  • From the Archive to the Computer

Open Access•Henning Schmidgen, Bernhard Dotzler et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Analytics•2023

Michel Foucault famously introduced the method of “discourse analysis” in the humanities, especially in historiography. In his _Archaeology of Knowledge_, originally published in 1969, in particular, Foucault argues for making the history of knowledge the object of discourse analyses. In the context of the current surge of interest in discourse analysis in the field of computer science, however, there are hardly any references to Foucault, partly…

  • Remembering the 60s“. Für eine Medienwissenschaftsgeschichte des Wunschdenkens

  • Programmed Violence

    Bernhard Dotzler•ARTICLE•Cultural Politics an International…•2012•References: 5

Each “new technology” inflicts “new violence” on its subjects. Following Marshall McLuhan's argument, this article outlines a theoretical frame for thinking about the relationship between violence and the media. Focusing on Stanley Milgram's experiment mentioned by McLuhan in his essay “The Violence of the Media,” it argues that violence not only is conveyed or represented by that medium but resides in the medium itself. Media add violence to our…

  • “… Die richtige Art wissenschaftlicher Objekte…”

    Open Access•Bernhard Dotzler, Bernhard J Dotzler•ARTICLE•Berichte zur Wissenschaftsgeschicht…•2009

Warren McCulloch marks the brain explicitly as an epistemic object. Since then, to see 'in statu nascendi' what brain research means implies the irrefutability of the truth that the mind is in the head. And it implies to see the contingency of this knowledge. This again allows to ask for more details about the object and its destiny--beginning with the riddle, why McCulloch is not forgotten until today, but his clear designation is forgotten. A c…

  • Wissen in Geschichten. Zur wechselseitigen Erhellung von Literatur, Medien und Wissenschaft

    Open Access•Bernhard Dotzler, Bernhard J Dotzler•ARTICLE•Berichte zur Wissenschaftsgeschicht…•2009•References: 1

Knowledge in Stories. On the Mutual Lucidation of Literature, Media, and Science. What are science studies for? The article faces this question by arguing, 1. that they can help to improve literary criticism, and 2. that such an improved criticism allows to recognize how knowledge, whether scientific or not, is linked with history and culture respectively. Both aspects are demonstrated by some remarks on Theodor Fontane's most famous novel, Effi …
