Open Access•Sandra Mantu, Lisa Berntsen et al.•ARTICLE•Transfer European Review of…•2025

While the right to health is a basic human right recognised in international law, the COVID-19 pandemic painfully revealed that existing policies and regulations poorly protect many categories of migrant workers, not only during a pandemic, but beyond. This article draws on research data collected during the pandemic and examines the experiences of ‘essential’ EU migrant workers with Dutch health care and identifies structural barriers migrant wo…

  • Older refugees and internally displaced people in African countries

    Open Access•A G M Böcker, A Hunter•ARTICLE•Journal of Refugee Studies•2025

By and large, the attention and resources of governments, NGOs, and humanitarian actors have been directed at children and working-age displaced people, ignoring the needs and perspectives of displaced elders. Africa is the continent with the largest number of displaced people aged 60 and over. To help achieve equity and better representation for this latter group, it appears essential to delineate and clarify the evidence base on displaced elder…

  • Live-in migrant care worker arrangements in Germany and the Netherlands

Open Access•Vincent Horn, Cornelia Schweppe et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Ageing…•2019

Private households in ageing societies increasingly employ live-in migrant carers (LIMCs) to care for relatives in need of 24/7 care and supervision. Whilst LIMC arrangements are a common practice in Germany, they are only recently emerging in the Netherlands. Taking this development as a starting point, this study uses the countries’ different long-term care (LTC) regimes as the analytical framework to explore and compare the motivations and jus…

Statistics on asylum applications have been used in a highly selective way in the debates on refugees and asylum policies in Western Europe, to justify restrictive measures. This paper provides a more systematic analysis of these statistics. It focuses on the pattern of origins and destinations for asylum seekers in the European Union in the period 1985-1994.... When the patterns of origin and destinations are compared for separate years, it beco…

This article summarises the findings of a study into the ways in which complaints about racial discrimination are dealt with in the Netherlands. The Dutch legislators have chosen to use primarily the criminal law in the fight against racial discrimination. Although racial discrimination became more and more a matter of public concern in the Netherlands during the last decade, the number of court cases has remained very low. The researchers found …
