Are global cities homogenizing? An assessment of urban form and heat island implications
Impact of the Covid-19 lockdown on air quality in the Delhi Metropolitan Region
An aggregated climate teleconnection index linked to historical Egyptian famines of the last thousand years
Variations in the Nile River water level have been historically associated with social development of the Egyptian civilization, particularly through times of famine. In addition, the Nile River water levels have been strongly linked to variations in climate teleconnections, specifically El Niño/Southern Oscillation, the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation. In this paper, we demonstrate that the cumulative effect…
Reanalysis and Extension of Namias's Climatological Isentropic Analysis
This study revisits, updates, and evaluates the climatological isentropic analysis method pioneered by Jerome Namias in the 1930s. Early researchers including Namias noted many advantages to the use of constant potential temperature surfaces, or isentropic analysis, over constant pressure charts (e.g., barometric heights) but aviation needs for constant pressure charts caused climatological isentropic research to wane after World War II. We emplo…
Water Planning Under Climatic Uncertainty in Phoenix
The uncertainties associated with global climate models pose substantial hurdles for urban water planning. Despite growing consensus among climatologists that the American Southwest is headed for a warmer and drier future, water planners in metropolitan Phoenix and elsewhere are reluctant to consider long-term climate change as a significant factor in increased risk of future water scarcity. A new paradigm for climate research and water planning …
Bayesian Maximum Entropy Mapping and the Soft Data Problem in Urban Climate Research
The pressing problem of Phoenix's urban heat island (UHI) has spawned numerous academic studies of the spatiotemporal nature of this physical process and its relationship to energy and water use, urban design features, and ecosystem processes. Critical to these studies is an accurate representation of the UHI over space and time. This article is concerned chiefly with representing the UHI by using the Bayesian Maximum Entropy (BME) method of mode…

Spatial Patterns and Determinants of Winter Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide Concentrations in an Urban Environment
The purpose of this article is to describe determinants and spatial patterns of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) in Phoenix, Arizona. Specifically, we use geographic information systems (GIS) and regression-based analyses to identify the human and biological factors that contribute to spatial and temporal variations in near-surface (2-meter height) atmospheric CO2 levels. We use these factors to create estimated surfaces of CO2 concentrations for…

Historical Rainfall Patterns and Arroyo Activity within the Zuni River Drainage Basin, New Mexico
Climate change, grazing practices, timbering activities, and erosional thresholds have been proposed to explain widespread accelerated arroyo erosion near the turn of the century in the southwestern United States. We analyze the morphology and potential causes of arroyo activity in the Zuni River drainage basin of New Mexico; our analyses illustrate the linkage between arroyos and changes that occurred through time in local precipitation patterns…
