“Conscience and the Ends of Humanity: Christian Humanism and Artificial Intelligence”
The astonishing speed of the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has sparked reflections by theologians and philosophers on what distinctiveness, if any, human beings possess as individuals and as a species. This article addresses this question with respect to an ancient idea in Christian thought reaching back to St. Paul and examined again and again throughout history, namely, human conscience. While sometimes criticized as a tyrannous f…

Theologian, Teacher, and Friend: Tributes to James M. Gustafson
James M. Gustafson, who died in 2021, has influenced generations of theologians and ethicists. In this article, five students, colleagues, and friends provide short reflections on what Gustafson has meant for their work as scholars of theology and religious ethics

The Ethics of Radical Life Extension: Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox Christian, and Global Ethic Perspectives
Biomedical technologies capable of sharply reducing or ending human aging, “radical life extension” (RLE), call for a Christian response. The authors featured in this article offer some preliminary thoughts. Common themes include: What kind of life counts as a “good life;” the limits, if any, of human freedom; the consequences of extended life on the human species and on the Earth; the meaning and value of finite and vulnerable embodied life; the…

The Destiny of Creation: Theological Ethical Reflections on Laudato Si
In this essay, I ask what the precise relation is between Laudato si's theology and its claims about our individual and corporate responsibility for the environment and the plight of the poor. To do so, I first clarify the relationship between the theological claims and its account of moral norms, situating the text within the history of western ethical theory. I then turn to reconstruct the submerged theology of the encyclical, focusing on Pope …
A Response to “Participation: A Religious Worldview” by James M. Gustafson
This response offers an interpretation of James Gustafson's “Participation: A Religious Worldview,” which thinks with Gustafson on the theme of “participation,” while highlighting points where my own thoughts diverge from his. The essay begins by drawing the reader's attention to Gustafson's style, arguing that the simple elegance of his writing constitutes part of his larger claim about the need to remove ourselves from the center of our thought…

Religion and the Human Future: An Essay on Theological Humanism
This powerful manifesto outlines a vision called theological humanism based on the idea that that the integrity of life provides a way to articulate the meaning of religion for the human future. Explores a profound quest to understand the meaning and responsibility of our shared and yet divided humanity amidst the uncertainty of modern society Articulates the idea that human beings are mixed creatures striving for integrity not only trying to con…

Reply to Flood
I WANT TO THANK Professor Gavin Flood for his insightful response to my essay on the future of religious ethics. Not only did he get my argument right, but at several points Flood makes a better case than I do! Happily, I need only expand on a few points. Flood notes, first, that I recognize the ethical praxis of traditions “alongside” the work of religious ethics in an academic context. That is right. Yet, I also tried to suggest that a multidim…
On the Future of Religious Ethics: Keeping Religious Ethics Religious and Ethical
This essay proposes a method and aim for the future of religious ethics. Rather than surveying the usual debates about the field, the essay situates the various kinds of work in religious ethics both in the contemporary global context and with respect to the modern western conception of what defines a "discipline" and the aspiration to a system of the sciences. In response to the breakdown of the modern project, various claims about rationality a…
Response to Cabezón
I WANT TO THANK Professor Cabezón for an engaging paper written, supposedly, from his “little corner” of the field of religious studies but which, in fact, sheds light on much of the field as a whole. As he notes, the authors of these essays for the JAAR were encouraged to write something like a “manifesto” and so, per definition, to call others to awaken and to change. Cabezón has done so with considerable skill and dispatch. The respondents to …

Making and Living Myth: On Michael Fishbane's Biblical Myth and Rabbinic Mythmaking
It is a delight and honor for me to respond to Professor Michael Fishbane's magisterial work, Biblical Myth and Rabbinic Mythmaking and, additionally, to do so within the pages of The Jewish Quarterly Review. Anyone who cracks the covers of his book will be humbled and also ennobled by Fishbane's breadth of learning and depth of insight. Of course, this also means that any response, especially a relatively short one, will never plumb the wealth o…

Theological Ethics and Global Dynamics: In the Time of Many Worlds
A Preface to Ethics: Global Dynamics and the Integrity of Life
This essay outlines a new preface for ethics demanded by the massive developments of the global age. It does so in and through the comparative use of “myths” to explicate the lived structure of experience. The essay begins by isolating main features of global dynamics, including proximity, the compression of the world and the expansion of consciousness, and also global, cultural reflexivity. In the second step of the “preface,” it is argued that …
Attitudes toward Joining Authoritarian Organizations and Sectarian Churches
Individuals affected by a rapidly changing or disorganized society are constrained to adapt in some manner. Two modes of adaptation are indicated by tendencies toward joining authoritarian organizations and sectarian churches. The first is an attempt to regain and preserve an interaction pattern perceived as threatened; the second represents retreat from a society which is perceived to be disorderly and threatening. If alienation is on the rise, …

Religion as a Superordinate Meaning System and Socio-Psychological Integration
Theoretical discussions of religion's integrative potential are empirically tested with survey data collected from a sample of 609 respondents. Iutegration is measured with morale, Srole's anomia, and various alienation scales. Product-moment correlations show that participation in secular organizations is more highly associated with socio-psychological integration than is participation in church services. In order to test Robert Bellah's meaning…
