Global Pro Bono
The principle and practice of pro bono, or volunteer legal services for the poor and other marginalized groups, is an increasingly important feature of justice systems around the world. Pro bono initiatives now exist in more than eighty countries – including Colombia, Portugal, Nigeria, and Singapore – and the list keeps growing. Covering the spread of pro bono across five continents, this book provides a unique data set permitting the first-ever…
An Equal Place
This book is about the role of lawyers in the movement to challenge economic inequality in one of America’s most unequal cities: Los Angeles. Covering a transformative period of city history—from the 1992 riots to the 2008 recession—the book examines how law has been used, and what it has achieved, in the struggle to make Los Angeles a more equal place. The backdrop is the dramatic growth of low-wage work powered by global outsourcing, declining …

Blue and Green
This book is about the struggle over the future of work and the environment on the edge of the global economy. It traces the history of conflict in an industry that is not widely known, but sits at the epicentre for the global supply chain: short-haul trucking responsible for moving the mass of imports from enormous cargo ships to warehouses and retailers around the country. The book’s specific focus is on the largest and most important campaign …
The Social Movement Turn in Law
The rise of social movements in US legal scholarship is a current response to an age-old problem in progressive legal thought: harnessing law for social change while maintaining a distinction between law and politics. This problem erupted in controversy around the civil rights–era concept of legal liberalism defined by activist courts and lawyers pursuing political reform through law. Contemporary legal scholars have responded by building on soci…

Community Economic Development as Progressive Politics
Community economic development (CED) emerged during the 1990s as the dominant approach to redressing urban poverty, replacing entitlement programs and civil rights initiatives with a market-based strategy for promoting economic equality.Premised on the idea that poor neighborhoods are underutilized markets in need of private sector investment, market-based CED gained a broad range of ideological adherents, resonating with proponents of black nati…

Vulnerability to the Effects of Recession
Neo-Marxist crisis theory and sectoral analysis are used to analyze differential vulnerability to the effects of recessions among minority and female workers. The 1974–75 recession is used as a case study to examine the numerous labor market consequences encountered by workers employed in various industrial and service sectors. By focusing crisis theory on the 1974–75 slump, conclusions are reached about the relationship among sectoral analysis, …

The Economic Socialization of Children
The literature in social psychology is remarkably free of socialization research exploring how children acquire ideas about capitalism. In this paper, we report the results of such a study. Generally, we find strong empirical evidence suggesting that economic socialization progressively orients children to a favorable view of capitalism and structured social inequality
