  • The speculative making(s) of ethics-in-practice in universities

Open Access•Martin Oliver, Jade Vu Henry•ARTICLE•Learning Media and Technology•2026

This methodological paper responds to calls to resist the ‘protocolisation’ of ethics through an analytic move that connects thinking about the ethics of technology to the doing of ethics in university settings. This move draws from the engaged program in Science and Technology Studies (Sismondo 2008), and the speculative ethics of care articulated by Puig de la Bellacasa (2011). We argue that this critical, more-than-human understanding of care …

  • Expanding adaptive teacher expertise in higher education

Open Access•Hanlin Zhang, Martin Oliver et al.•ARTICLE•Teaching and Teacher Education•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 3

This study explores adaptive teacher expertise in higher education, using heuristics of breakdown and repair from the sociology of knowledge to situate this concept in a sociomaterial exploration of classroom teaching practices and institutional environments. Data were collected through a four-month ethnographic research study including both observations and interview with university teachers in a Chinese university. It was coded and analysed to …

  • Theorizing ‘The Gap’ Twenty Years Later

    Open Access•Jade Vu Henry•ARTICLE•Postdigital Science and Education•2023•References: 26

Drawing from Feminist Science and Technology Studies, this paper explores how we might revisit and recuperate past academic research projects, theories, and relationships to design futures that matter for social good. As context, I begin by outlining a decade of research in Information and Communication Technologies for Development (ICTD), which linked the United Nations Millennium Development Goals to innovations in telecommunications and comput…

  • Who Will Watch the Watchmen? The Ethico-political Arrangements of Algorithmic Proctoring for Academic Integrity

Open Access•Jade Vu Henry, Martin Oliver•ARTICLE•Postdigital Science and Education•2022

Critics of artificial intelligence have suggested that the principles of fairness, accountability and transparency (FATE) have been used for ‘ethics washing’, in order to appease industrial interests. In this article, we develop this relational and context-dependent analysis, arguing that ethics should not be understood as abstract values or design decisions, but as socio-technical achievements, enacted in the practices of students, teachers and …

  • Not in our Name

Open Access•E J Nicholls, Jade Vu Henry et al.•ARTICLE•Nordic Journal of Science and…•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 12

In this paper, we draw on our collaborative work running a salon for thinking about care in STS research, which quickly became more about fostering an ethico-politics for thinking with care as a mode of academic intervention. Not dissimilar to the origins of the salon in nineteenth-century France, the salon provided a provocative and disruptive space for early career researchers (ECRs) to think together. As attention and critique increasingly poi…
