  • Reshaping platform governmentality

    Damien Renard, Salla-Maaria Laaksonen et al.•ARTICLE•Information Communication & Society•2026

This research explores the power dynamics between platform owners and online communities, focusing on the Stack Exchange moderation strike against the company’s new policy on AI-generated content. Using Foucault’s concept of governmentality, we show how the moderation of AI-generated content revealed tensions and resulted in collective action that made platform governmentality visible. In their strike, moderators resisted the policy by repurposin…

  • Maintaining and Repairing the Cancer Registries’ Regime of Knowing in the Turbulent Context of the French National AI Strategy

    Open Access•François Lambotte, Anja Martin-Scholz•ARTICLE•Science & Technology Studies•2025

This ethnographic study investigates maintenance and repair practices that underpin the data work of French cancer registries (CR) amid transformations in healthcare data governance driven by France’s national AI strategy. CRs’ mission is to provide high-quality data to assess public health policies. Through three cases of breakdown, we analyse repair practices in relation to the regime of knowing—encompassing practices, value schemes, and author…

  • Ricoeur’s triple mimesis as a hermeneutic of the ethnographer’s work in CCO

Open Access•Joanne Jojczyk, François Lambotte et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Research in…•2025

Purpose This article explores the interpretive process of ethnographic research within the framework of Communicative Constitution of Organization (CCO) approaches. Specifically, it examines the role of Ricoeur’s triple mimesis as a hermeneutic tool in making sense of the extensive data gathered during a three-year ethnographic study of a cultural event, “Le Grand Huit,” part of the Mons 2015 European Capital of Culture initiative. Design/methodo…

  • L’artisanat des données à l’ère de la datafication

    Open Access•François Lambotte, Kevin Carillon•ARTICLE•Communication•2025•References: 4

  • Agency as an emerging phenomenon in the construction of massive open online courses

Jan Zienkowski, François Lambotte•ARTICLE•Learning Media and Technology•2024

This paper demonstrates how agency emerges as the teaching team members of three social science and humanities massive open online courses (MOOCs) reflexively discuss the affordances and limitations offered by edX. Special attention goes to the entanglement of forums within their courses. We examine the edX platform as a discursive–material knot, a dispositif that can be partially configured by teaching team members. The interviewees interpretive…

  • From bricolage to thickness

Open Access•François Lambotte, Dominique Meunier et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Research in…•2013

Purpose The research process is commonly viewed as a succession of linear, structured and planned practices that exclude informal and unplanned practices, engaging with the unexpected or the uncertain. The authors’ aim is to explore this aspect of researching in connection with the narratives of researchers as they oscillate between past and present, theory and empiricism. Design/methodology/approach The authors first draw on the concept of “bric…
