Effects of Schema-Enriched Communication in Teams With Diverse Hearing Status
This study examined the effects of (a) schema-enriched communication and (b) computer-based messaging on the sharing of knowledge and problem solving in teams with deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) and typical hearing (TH) postsecondary students. Four-member teams comprising either all DHH, all TH, or two DHH and two TH postsecondary students solved a complex problem. Measures consisted of (a) shared written information, (b) creation of a matrix with…
Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing and Other Postsecondary Learners' Retention of STEM Content With Tablet Computer-Based Notes
Four groups of postsecondary students, 25 who were deaf/hard of hearing (D/HH), 25 with a learning disability, 25 who were English language learners (ELLs), and 25 without an identified disability studied notes that included text and graphical information based on a physics or a marine biology lecture. The latter 3 groups were normally hearing. All groups had higher scores on post- than on pretests for each lecture, with each group showing genera…
Attractiveness, easiness and other issues: Student evaluations of professors on Ratemyprofessors.com
Felton et al. (2004 Felton, J., Mitchell, J. and Stinson, M. 2004. Web‐based student evaluation of professors: the relations between perceived quality, easiness and sexiness. Assessment and Evaluation in Higher Education, 29(1): 91–108. [Taylor & Francis Online] , [Google Scholar]) reported that web‐based student evaluations of teaching (SET) demonstrated a student preference for course easiness and instructor sexiness. This study explores these …
Validity and Reliability of the Classroom Participation Questionnaire With Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students in Public Schools
The Classroom Participation Questionnaire (CPQ) was administered to 136 deaf or hard of hearing (D/HH) students attending general education classrooms in Grades 4-10. The CPQ is a student-rated measure that yields scores for Understanding Teachers, Understanding Students, Positive Affect, and Negative Affect. Validity and reliability of a long (28-item) and a short (16-item) form are reported. We provide evidence of (a) internal structure validit…
Web-based student evaluations of professors: The relations between perceived quality, easiness and sexiness
College students critique their professors' teaching at RateMyProfessors.com, a web page where students anonymously rate their professors on Quality, Easiness, and Sexiness. Using the self-selected data from this public forum, we examine the relations between quality, easiness, and sexiness for 3190 professors at 25 universities. For faculty with at least ten student posts, the correlation between quality and easiness is 0.61, and the correlation…
Empirical paper. Participation of deaf and hard-of-hearing students in classes with hearing students
This project identified key issues concerning participation of deaf and hard-of-hearing (D/HH) students in regular (mainstream) classes. In one study, qualitative data were collected from 40 participants in focus groups consisting of interpreters, teachers of the deaf, and notetakers. In a second study, repeated field observations were made of four elementary-level D/HH students who were participating in small-group learning activities with heari…
Considerations in educating deaf and hard-of-hearing students in inclusive settings
This article provides an overview of key issues pertinent to an inclusive approach to the education of deaf students in order to establish a context for interpreting and integrating the articles in this issue. It discusses definitions of inclusion, integration, and mainstreaming from placement-related, philosophical, and pragmatic perspectives. The article provides demographic information pertinent to an inclusive approach. It also compares persp…
Full Inclusion: A Path for Integration or Isolation
Topic of Interest: Full Inclusion 3. the effect of the child with a disability on the rest of the class 4. the cost of a regular-education placement with proper supplementary aids and services As shown above, the standards applied by the courts do not address the potential benefits of a placement in a program or school for the deaf. As currently written and interpreted by the courts, IDEA mandates that preference be given to placement in the regu…
Effects of Social-Comparison Feedback upon Extended Performance of Boys on Simple Task
In one of the few studies of the performance of children under social-comparison feedback (information about other's performance relative to one's o w n ) , McClintock and Van Avermaet (1975) showed that feedback produces higher performance than no feedback. Their manipulation, however, was limited to three 4-min. trials. The first goal of the present study was to examine the effecc of social-comparison feedback .upon children's performance over …
Effects of rate and word boundary ambiguity on recall by normal and impaired listeners
