  • Adding Insult to Injury: The Covid-19 Crisis Strikes Latin America

    Open Access•Juan Grigera•ARTICLE•Development and Change•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 34

This article takes on the task of historicizing the global crisis that unfolded after the outbreak of COVID-19, focusing on its particular dynamics in Latin America. It proposes a distinction between a first phase - an unmitigated crisis that lasted until the end of 2020 - and a second phase in the period since then, that is defined by managed crisis and lukewarm economic recovery. The first phase showed a profoundly fragmented local state respon…

The coming to office of Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil has brought to the fore the need to understand the rise of the far right and to come to terms with the conflicted legacies of more than a decade of rule under the Workers’ Party. This forum brings together six leading intellectuals from different traditions on the left and introduces their reflections on the contradictions and complexities of the Workers’ Party, the 2008 crisis, the June 2013 prote…

    Open Access•Maurizio Atzeni, Juan Grigera•ARTICLE•Work Employment and Society•2019•Cited by: 9•References: 14

In recent years sociological research on labour in Argentina has re-flourished. This revival has seen a turn towards the Anglo-Saxon and international traditions of workplace and trade union studies, but it has been generally one-sided, focusing on the relatively successful experiences of trade unions' organized workers in formal sector workplaces. This has represented a considerable departure from the pre-2001 crisis research's agenda that focus…

  • Populism in Latin America: Old and new populisms in Argentina and Brazil

    Open Access•Juan Grigera•ARTICLE•International Political Science…•2017•Cited by: 21•References: 9

There has been a renewed interest in populism in Latin America, sparked by the social mobilization against neoliberalism usually referred to as the ‘Pink Tide’. Governments brought to power by the Pink Tide have been successful in reconstructing the conditions of capital accumulation as well as incorporating a new set of social movement demands. This article puts forward an interpretation of ‘Pink Tide neopopulism’ based on a political economy ap…

  • Conspicuous Silences: State and Class in Structuralist and Neostructuralist Thought

    Juan Grigera•CHAPTER•Crisis and Contradiction•2014

This paper addresses two issues in ECLAC and structuralist thought that are of key importance to unravelling the class constraints of this tradition. The first one regards its underlying dull instrumentalist conception of the state and the second is the model of development. The paper argues that structuralists ́ silence regarding any theorizing of the state and their passionate advocacy for (national) development based on industrialisation can b…
