  • Sun protection behavior

    Anne K Julian, Rebecca A Ferrer et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology & Health•2023

Sun protection behavior can reduce skin cancer risk. This paper provides an overview of skin cancer risk and the complex behavioral options for sun protection, along with a narrative review of research on determinants of, and interventions to promote, sun protection. Gaps and opportunities for future research are also outlined. Evidence supports the effectiveness of sunscreen use, ultraviolet (UV) protection clothing, and shade seeking. However, …

  • Cross‐Sectional Association of State Recess Laws With District‐Level Policy and School Recess Provision in the United States

Open Access•Kimberly A Clevenger, Michelle Lowry et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of School Health•2022

BACKGROUND: State recess laws are recommended to encourage adequate and equitable access to recess and its benefits, but the downstream effects of state recess laws are unknown. We examined the association of state recess laws with district-level policy and school recess provision. METHODS: This is cross-sectional analysis of the School Health Policies and Practices Survey, a US nationally representative sample of school districts (2016) and scho…

  • Associations Between State Laws Governing Recess Policy with Children's Physical Activity and Health

    Open Access•Kimberly A Clevenger, Frank M Perna et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of School Health•2022

BACKGROUND: State-level laws governing recess policies vary widely across the United States. We characterize the presence of such laws and assess their associations with child-level outcomes. METHODS: The presence of a state recess law was determined using the Classification of Laws Associated with School Students (CLASS) database. Parents of 6- to 11-year-old children reported physical activity, overall health, school absences, school-related pr…

  • Prevalence of Physical Activity Requirements Among US Colleges/Universities Participating in the American College Health Association-National College Health Assessment II

Open Access•Caitlin P Bailey, Michelle Lowry et al.•ARTICLE•INQUIRY The Journal of Health…•2022

Physical activity requirements (PAR; ie, courses required for graduation) have been proposed as a policy solution for increasing undergraduate physical activity. This study aimed to report prevalence of PAR among US colleges/universities participating in the American College Health Association-National College Health Assessment (ACHA-NCHA) and to understand whether these requirements were associated with campus characteristics. Data from the Amer…

  • Walking and Sun Protective Behaviors

    Open Access•Calvin P Tribby, Frank M Perna et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

Sun protective behaviors and physical activity have the potential to reduce cancer risk. Walking is the most common type of physical activity in the United States, but it is unclear whether sun protective behaviors differ by categories of walking, such as leisure versus transportation walking. We examined whether sun protective behaviors varied by category or duration of walking in the 2015 National Health Interview Survey (N = 26,632), age ≥ 18 …

  • From ideas to efficacy

    Open Access•Susan M Czajkowski, Lynda H Powell et al.•ARTICLE•Health Psychology•2015•Citada por: 27•Referencias: 2

Given the critical role of behavior in preventing and treating chronic diseases, it is important to accelerate the development of behavioral treatments that can improve chronic disease prevention and outcomes. Findings from basic behavioral and social sciences research hold great promise for addressing behaviorally based clinical health problems, yet there is currently no established pathway for translating fundamental behavioral science discover…

  • The association of soda sales tax and school nutrition laws

Open Access•K Leigh Greathouse, Jamie F Chriqui et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2014

Objective The current research examined the association between state disfavoured tax on soda (i.e. the difference between soda sales tax and the tax on food products generally) and a summary score representing the strength of state laws governing competitive beverages (beverages that compete with the beverages in the federally funded school lunch programme) in US schools. Design The Classification of Laws Associated with School Students (CLASS) …

  • Cross-sectional examination of physical and social contexts of episodes of eating and drinking in a national sample of US adults

Open Access•Anna Oh, April Oh et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2014

Objective The current study characterizes associations between physical and social contexts of self-reported primary episodes of eating/drinking and sociodemographic and obesity-related variables in US adults. Design Multinomial logistic regression was used to analyse a nationally representative sample of adults from the 2006–2008 American Time Use Survey. Models identifying physical (where) and social (whom) contexts of primary eating/drinking e…

  • Change in School Nutrition–Related Laws From 2003 to 2008

Louise C Mâsse, Frank M Perna et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2013•Referencias: 30

Objectives. We examined state laws affecting the school food environment and changes in these laws between 2003 to 2008. Methods. We used the Westlaw legal database to identify state-codified laws, with scoring derived from the updated School Nutrition–Environment State Policy Classification System, obtained from the Classification of Laws Associated With School Students Web site. Results. States significantly changed their school nutrition laws …

  • The Association of State Law to Physical Education Time Allocation in US Public Schools

Frank M Perna, Anna Oh et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2012•Referencias: 24

Objectives. We examined whether public schools in states with specific and stringent physical education (PE) laws, as assessed by the Physical Education–Related State Policy Classification System (PERSPCS), available on the Classification of Laws Associated with School Students (C.L.A.S.S.) Web site, reported more weekly PE time in the most recent School Health Policies and Programs Survey (SHPPS). Methods. Schools (n = 410) were grouped by their…

  • An Empirical Comparison of the Four Channel Flow Model and Adventure Experience Paradigm

    Christopher D Jones, Chris D Jones et al.•ARTICLE•Leisure Sciences•2003•Citada por: 4

The objective of this study was to conduct empirical comparisons between two models of optimal experience within an on-site whitewater kayaking setting using a modification of the Experience Sampling Method. Four concerns are examined: (1) differences in explanatory power between the four channel flow model and the Adventure Experience Paradigm, (2) convergent validity among measures used to determine conditions within these models, (3) differenc…

  • Validation of the Flow Theory in an On-Site Whitewater Kayaking Setting

Chris Jones, Christopher D Jones et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Leisure Research•2000•Citada por: 19•Referencias: 3

The validation of the flow theory in an on-site whitewater setting is examined. A-priori hypotheses emphasized 3 concerns: (1) the relationship between a four channel model of flow and specific levels of flow indicators, (2) differences in the explanatory power of the four channel model and an original model of flow, and (3) the relationship between river difficulty and the frequencies of four channels (flow, anxiety, apathy, and boredom). On-sit…
