Generalized Intergenerational Mobility Regressions
Current research on intergenerational mobility (IGM) is informed by statistical approaches based on log-level regressions, whose economic interpretations remain largely unknown. We reveal the subjective value-judgments in them: they are represented by weighted-sums (or aggregators) over heterogeneous groups, with controversial economic properties. Log-level regressions tend to overrepresent the experiences of middle-class children while underrepr…
Identifying factors via automatic debiased machine learning
Identifying risk factors that have significant explanatory power for the cross‐sectional asset returns is fundamental in asset pricing. We adopt a novel automatic debiased machine learning (ADML) method proposed by Chernozhukov, Newey, and Singh (2022) to robustly estimate partial pricing effect of a certain factor controlling for a large number of confounding factors under a nonlinear stochastic discount factor (SDF) assumption. The ADML resolve…
Evidence of Uniform Inefficiency in Market Portfolios Based on Dominance Tests
We find stochastic uniform inefficiency of many widely held (active) portfolios and fund strategies relative to popular benchmarks. Uniformity provides robust findings over general classes of utility (loss) functions and unknown distribution of returns. Evidence is based on statistical tests for the null of stochastic uniform inefficiency of a given portfolio. The alternative is that there is at least one portfolio that dominates it. We derive an…

The Gender Gap between Earnings Distributions
We advocate a different approach to measure the gender gap, summarizing each distribution by suitable evaluative functions and computing the difference between the evaluations. Unlike the conventional approach, ours does not assume rank invariance. We discuss the decision-theoretic framework behind different functions and introduce measures based on entropy functions. We further adopt quantile-copula approaches to account for selection into full-…
Poverty Reduction Policies and Practices in Developing Asia
This book looks at the major policy challenges facing developing Asia and how the region sustains rapid economic growth to reduce multidimensional poverty through socially inclusive and environmentall
Comparing Income Mobility in Germany and the United States Using Generalized Entropy Mobility Measures
Based on a derivation of the asymptotic sampling distribution of the generalized entropy mobility measures, this paper provides a statistically rigorous analysis of income mobility in Germany and the United States using the panel data set PSID-SOEP equivalent data file. Several alternative measures of income aggregation, inequality measures, and groupings are considered to establish robustness. We find that, to a high degree of statistical confid…
Specification Analysis in Dynamic Models
The theoretical and empirical implications of omitted variables, particularly dynamic adjustment effects, are studied. In particular, the attempt to model for such omissions by including possibly irrelevant variables is investigated. This extends the existing knowledge of misspecification analysis in several directions. Ordinary least squares is the estimation technique under study, as has been the case in several recent and related studies. In o…

Multivariate Measures of Well-Being and an Analysis of Inequality in the Michigan Data
We demonstrate a multidimensional approach for combining several indicators of well-being, including the traditional money-income indicators. This methodology avoids the difficult and much criticized task of computing imputed incomes for such indicators as net worth and schooling. Inequality in the proposed composite measures is computed using relative inequality indexes that permit simple analysis of both the contribution of each welfare indicat…
