Hybrid work design profiles
Hybrid work is fast emerging as the future of work. Yet, it is not clear how key work design characteristics that are salient in hybrid work, namely scheduling autonomy, social support, workload, and close monitoring, are experienced in the home compared to the workplace for hybrid workers, and how these work characteristics combine holistically to influence well-being. We adopted a novel approach and measured work characteristics as experienced …
Unlocking motivation for energy saving
This study examines the role of different types of motivation and their associated locus of regulation among German consumers, aiming to understand their adoption of ‘energy-wise’ consumption behaviors. Cluster analysis reveals distinct approaches needed to support these behaviors. Three clusters emerged: cluster 1, characterized by high autonomous motivation and low external regulation; cluster 2, showing low autonomous regulation, low external …
Fostering strategic synergy
An effective innovation strategy is crucial for firm performance and national economic growth, yet many firms still face the challenge of misalignment between their innovation activities and strategies. While previous studies focused on the mediation role of innovation activities on strategy and performance, research is needed to examine the complex interdependencies between strategies and innovation activities to better understand their impact o…
The Influence of Work-Family Conflict and Enhancement on the Wellbeing of the Self-Employed and Their Spouses
This study examines the effect of work-family conflict (WFC) and work-family enhancement (WFE) on the wellbeing of the self-employed and their spouses. Adopting a dyadic perspective, our analysis focuses on three dimensions of wellbeing: physical health, mental health and life satisfaction. Using the Spillover and Crossover Model as theoretical framework and the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model as an estimation technique, we investigate how wo…
Using aggregated mobile phone location data to compare the realised foodscapes of different socio-economic groups
Describing and mapping diversity and accessibility of the urban food environment with open data and tools
Policy-led selection of the most appropriate empirical model to estimate hedonic prices in the residential market
Enhanced Huff model for estimating Park and Ride (PnR) catchment areas in Perth, WA
Fuzzy Logic for Social Simulation Using NetLogo
Fuzzy Logic is a framework particularly useful to formalise and deal with imprecise concepts and statements expressed in natural language. This paper has three related aims. First, it aims to provide a short introduction to the basics of Fuzzy Logic within the context of social simulation. Secondly, it presents a well-documented NetLogo extension that facilitates the use of Fuzzy Logic within NetLogo. Finally, by providing a concrete example, it …
The value of service-learning
The aim of this paper is to discuss the value of service-learning to students. There currently exists a gap in this understanding. We apply mixed-methods research using a sample of higher education students to develop this discussion. We found that students valued service-learning for the opportunity that it provides to increase their personal citizenship skills. We suggest this reflects Habermas’ framework of knowledge/interests, namely instrume…
Spatial analysis of access to and accessibility surrounding train stations
Why do students differ in the value they place on pro-social activities
Pro-social activities are intended to benefit someone or something other than oneself. There is little known about the pro-social activities students valorize or why students differ in the value they place on different activities. The study seeks to present an understanding about both these matters. Informed by the critical theorist Jürgen Habermas we first constructed a conceptual model to analyse the desirability and feasibility of pro-social a…
Lifecycle Stages and Residential Location Choice in the Presence of Latent Preference Heterogeneity
The choice of residential locations is affected by both dwelling and location characteristics. Preferences for these characteristics vary with each household's requirements, traditionally attributed to the household's lifecycle stage. With a cross-sectional study that identifies lifecycle stages according to household structure, this paper offers an investigation of residential location and shows that not all components of preference heterogeneit…
The Relevance of Traditional Town Planning Concepts for Travel Minimization
The ‘neighbourhood’ and ‘self-containment’ are longstanding town planning concepts aimed at travel minimization. While they remain central to practice, the transit-oriented development concept brings into question the relevance of planning for self-containment. Instead, the intention of transit-oriented development is to provide for travel both within the neighbourhood and within the sub-region. By examining the extent to which Perth residents ac…
