How Confrontational Protest Shapes Public Opinion: Experimental Evidence from Climate Mobilization
This study examines how different protest forms shape public opinion, distinguishing between support for protest tactics and policy goals. While protest is widely recognized as a legitimate mode of political participation, its forms vary in how they are perceived by the public. Drawing on two cross-sectional surveys and two survey experiments on climate protests in Germany, we focus on the distinction between demonstrative and confrontational pro…
Street mobilisation during election campaigns in multilevel systems: A supply–demand analysis
Election campaigns are periods of heightened political competition and opportunities for change. This research note examines whether such politicisation leads to increased street mobilisation, both in terms of who organises (supply) and who participates (demand). On the supply side, a 'professionalisation' of protest is expected, with more active institutional political and civil society actors. On the demand side, participation should rise. Rely…
Protest and the rise of left-nationalist challengers: Evidence from Germany
The cost-of-living crisis, unfolding in the shadow of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, highlighted policy positions not traditionally represented in European party systems and protest politics. Our study asks why large-scale protests, widely anticipated during Germany's 'Hot Autumn' of 2022, did not materialize despite a severe cost-ofliving crisis. Drawing on insights from social movement studies, we test the long-standing argument that successful …
Location matters! Geospatial dynamics of MP responses to Covid‐19 protests in multilevel systems
In liberal democracies, protest can serve as a trigger for necessary policy reforms, but it can also be used by a loud minority to advance political goals against the will of the majority. Focusing on such vocal protests in the context of the Covid‐19 pandemic, we investigate the following question: How does the location of protest events affect the likelihood of political engagement with the protests in a multilevel system? Combining social move…
Modulation of Democracy: Partisan Communication During and After Election Campaigns
It is well known that politicians speak differently when campaigning. The shadow of elections may affect candidates' change in tone during campaigns. However, to date, we lack a systematic study of the changes in communication patterns between campaign and non-campaign periods. In this study, we examine the sentiment expressed in 4.3 million tweets posted by members of national parliaments in the EU27 from 2018 to 2020. Our results show that (1) …
Market Dependence as a Boundary Construction for Work Solidarity with the Solo Self-employed
As more people work outside standard employment, the foundations of work solidarity are contested. How does work solidarity arise in atypical forms of work that are characterised by flexible, autonomous and self-dependent organisation, such as in solo self-employment? Drawing on a discursive approach to work solidarity, this article emphasises how market dependence can serve as a boundary construction to create work solidarity. Empirically, this …
Who Represents the Constituency? Online Political Communication by Members of Parliament in the German Mixed‐Member Electoral System
Members of parliament (MPs) are elected via two different tiers in mixed‐member electoral systems—as winners of a seat in a constituency or as party candidates under proportional rules. While previous research has identified important consequences of this “mandate divide” in parliaments, questions remain how this institutional setup affects MPs' political behavior in other arenas. Analyzing more than one million social media posts, this article i…
Do competitive districts get more political attention? Strategic use of geographic representation during campaign and non-campaign periods
