This report presents the results of excavations conducted at 13DK96, a Late Woodland occupation near Spirit Lake in northwest Iowa. Fieldwork was carried out during the summers of 2014, 2015, and 2016 by students enrolled at Lakeside Lab on West Lake Okoboji under the direction of John Doershuk, State Archaeologist of Iowa. Rich, well-preserved collections of bone, ceramic, and lithic materials are discussed with an emphasis on the faunal remains…

Curation of the John and Phil Palmquist Archaeological Collection
The 2018 SAA statement encouraging collaboration between archaeologists and “responsible and responsive stewards” included recommendations epitomizing decades of established practice at the University of Iowa Office of the State Archaeologist (OSA), a research center housing the State Archaeological Repository of Iowa. Values-Based Management of Archaeological Resources at a Landscape Scale
Public agencies at all levels of government and other organizations that manage archaeological resources often face the problem of many undertakings that collectively impact large numbers of individually significant archaeological resources. Such situations arise when an agency is managing a large area, such as a national forest, land management district, park unit, wildlife refuge, or military installation. These situations also may arise in reg…

Defining Battlefield Archaeological Context at Fort Madison, Iowa
The NRHP-listed Fort Madison site is the premiere Iowa location preserving War of 1812 materials. Previous excavations demonstrated that portions of the fort retained integrity, but the condition of surrounding associated features remained unknown. Recent investigations directly west of the fort revealed intact archaeological deposits representing the fort-era and battlefield activities, including portions of a landscape feature described in hist…

Early Woodland Occupation of the Northern Bluegrass
The West Runway site (15BE391) is located in an upland setting in Boone County, Kentucky. Excavations at this locality revealed intact Early Woodland deposits including pit features containing Fayette Thick ceramics and straight stemmed Kramer projectile points. Until these investigations, Fayette Thick ceramics had not previously been recovered from non-mound locations or in isolation within undisturbed feature contexts. Several radiocarbon dete…

Late Postclassic Chronology in Western Morelos, Mexico
Chronology building is an integral part of the archaeological research process, and changing research questions often require the refinement of existing chronologies. This view is illustrated with a description of the derivation, refinement, and confirmation of a ceramic sequence for the Postclassic period in Morelos, Mexico. The joint application of stratigraphy and quantitative ceramic seriation produced a five-phase Postclassic chronology. To …
