Conceptualizing and operationalizing community resilience
Literature from various academic disciplines indicates that in recent decades, community resilience (CR) has evolved significantly in conceptualization and operationalization. However, the relevance and empirical inclusion of CR in social and health sciences research remain sparse and fragmented. This scoping review, therefore, aimed to assess the conceptualization of CR in social and health sciences research; determine the availability of tools …
The phenomenon of spiritual homelessness in transnational spaces among international students in the United States
Although student mobility and educational border crossings, particularly from non‐Western economies to English‐speaking countries, such as the United States, are not new, theoretical concepts that help illuminate global student mobilities rarely examine lived realities of university students in transnational spaces. We aim to explore the phenomenon of ‘spiritual homelessness’ experienced by international students in the United States and how thei…
Personal and professional impacts of work-related stress alleviation strategies among child welfare workers in child advocacy center settings
Exploring stress, coping, and health outcomes among social workers
The continued prevalence and severity of stress among social workers, despite previous efforts to address the phenomenon, implies that current prevention and intervention strategies are ineffective. This may be partly due to a needed shift in research from the quantification of stress, to understanding the role that individual cognitive, and emotional mechanisms play in work-related stress and coping behaviours. The specific objectives of this qu…
Arts Entrepreneurship and Economic Development
In the past decade, an increasing number of cities have sought to use the promotion of the arts, and especially arts entrepreneurship, as a path to economic development and revitalization. The work of Richard Florida has been important in contributing to the implementation of these strategies, as has the success of cities such as Austin, Texas in attracting high-tech industries and a creative and diverse populace. The purpose of this survey of th…
Using a Qualitative Approach to Research to Build Trust Between a Non‐Aboriginal Researcher and Aboriginal Participants (Australia)
This article focuses on the qualitative methodologies employed in a research project developed in collaboration with Aboriginal advisors and gaining an in‐depth understanding of Aboriginal Victorian peoples’1 connection to their ancestral lands. It outlines why qualitative methodologies were used and highlights the ethical dimensions of working with Aboriginal Victorian communities. A research partnership was developed between Aboriginal Victoria…
Identifying early signs of aggression
Our aim was to develop an age‐appropriate measure of early manifestations of aggression. We constructed a questionnaire about normative developmental milestones into which a set of items measuring infants' use of physical force against people and expressed anger were included. These items comprise the Cardiff Infant Contentiousness Scale (CICS). Evidence for the reliability and validity of the CICS is provided from analyses of a sample of N =310 …
Domestic Exchange Rates and Regional Economic Growth in the United States, 1899–1908
This article examines one feature of the pre—Federal Reserve financial system that has not been widely researched: the market for bank drafts (the “domestic exchanges”). Though the exchanges existed for nearly a century, critics argued that exchange rate fluctuations exacerbated financial panics. We find, using cointegration analysis over the period from 1899 to 1908, that differences in growth rates across regions caused predictable movements in…
